Stars pound Panhandle, combine for 11 home runs to sweep series

GOODWELL, OKLA. – The OCU baseball team went on the road for the first time in conference play and earned the series sweep over the Aggies. 

Oklahoma City 15 – Oklahoma Panhandle State 0 

Oklahoma City earned a big win in game one after scoring 15 runs on 17 hits while scoring 4 runs each in the second, third, and sixth innings.  

The Stars launched four home runs with two coming from Chad Pike who went 2-for-4 with four RBIs as Hunter Lenochan hit his fourth homer of the year while Trent Kiraly knocked his 13th home run of the season out of the park to wrap up a 1-for-4 game.  

Aiden Van Rensum and Reese Ratchford tied for a game-high three hits apiece as Van Rensum went 3-for-4 with two RBIs which makes four straight games with a run batted in. Ratchford tallied three hits in five at-bats while knocking in a season-high four RBIs while adding his sixth double of the season. 

Tristan Williams extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 2-for-4 game while adding a double, RBI and a run scored. 

OCU earned its second shutout victory of the year on the backs of the starter Kade Shatwell who struck out six OPSU hitters in five innings of work while the two relievers Cole Sedgwick and Kason Bennefield each tossed one inning with one strikeout each.  

Oklahoma City tabbed its second-highest run total of the 2024 season while also setting a season-high in hits in a single game with 17.   


Oklahoma City 8 – Oklahoma Panhandle State 5 

The Aggies jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings until OCU cut the deficit to one after putting up three in the third on a Darian Duhon three-run homer.  

Entering the sixth trailing 5-3, the comeback was on for OCU Trent Kiraly, Chad Pike, and Barrett Daniel all homered in the inning to put the Stars ahead for the first time.  

In the seventh, Oklahoma City added two more insurance runs on another home run by way of Hunter Lenochan which resulted in two runs to earn the 8-5 win. 

OCU hit a season-high five home runs in game two as a team as Trent Kiraly launched his 14th homer of the season which puts him third overall in the NAIA and one away from last year's season total.  

Duhon led the team with three RBIs with his three-run jack in the third inning. 

Connor Ferguson earned the win on the mound after coming in relief for the starter Jacob Burkett Ferguson tossed three innings and gave up one run on five hits while picking up one strikeout. 

Oklahoma City 9 – Oklahoma Panhandle State 1  

Oklahoma City completed the series sweep over the Aggies with a 9-1 victory on 13 hits from the Stars while allowing just three hits for OPSU.  

Entering the final inning of play the score was knotted up a one apiece until OCU broke away for an eight-run inning as Darian Duhon ignited the hot bats of Oklahoma City with a three-run home run for the second straight game.  

Aiden Van Rensum put together a two-hit game which included a two-run homer in the seventh which put him tied with Duhon for third on the team.  

Trent Kiraly added two more hits which extended his hitting streak to 12 games while also scoring once.  

Andrew Limbaugh pitched a gem as the OCU starter in game three by allowing just one run on two hits in six innings pitched while striking out a career-high 10 batters.  

Oklahoma City wrapped up the series sweep by outscoring the Aggies 32-6 over the three-game slate while moving the all-time series record to 19-1 against Oklahoma Panhandle State. 

What's Next  

Oklahoma City will return home to host Texas Wesleyan Mar. 22-23 with a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 PM with a nine-inning game to follow on Saturday at 1 PM.
