Stars shoot its way to overtime victory, leaving Lions behind 94-88

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Senior Brandon Jackson and freshman Clayton Jewell each posted a double-double, and the Oklahoma City men's basketball team survived in extra time after completing an 18 point comeback to win 94-88 over Southwestern Assemblies of God on Thursday (Feb. 8) night inside Abe Lemons Arena. 

The Stars defense clamped down and forced SAGU (16-7, 12-5 SAC) into a 1-of-5 effort from downtown and just 3-of-10 from the floor while missing on its one and only free throw attempt in the extra five minutes. 

Three minutes into the second half Cortland Blake of SAGU knocked down a trey to solidify its largest lead of the game. Oklahoma City (7-16, 5-12 SAC) began working its way back inching closer and closer before the Stars ignited a 15-4 run at the 8:30 mark as back-to-back threes by the duo of Avery Jackson and Brandon Jackson put the Stars back in it before freshman Yorgio Golesis converted on the and-1 to tie the game at 73.  

As SAGU took a three-point lead with 1:47 left to play Brandon Jackson answered a three-pointer to tie things at 79. With 40 seconds and a chance to take the lead OCU had the ball as Avery Jackson missed on a layup opportunity before being put back up by Jewell giving Oklahoma City the lead for the lead. 

A pair of free throws with 17 seconds to go by JJ Boling tied it back up which sent the game into overtime after the Stars failed to secure a basket on the final possession. In overtime Avery Jackson and Parker Jones went back-to-back on threes as OCU outscored SAGU 13-7 in the overtime period. Brandon Jackson delievred the dagger at the line as the Stars top free throw shooter put the game away with a pair of makes from the foul line to secure a 94-88 upset over SAGU.   

Avery Jackson scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the second half and finished with seven rebounds while shooting 6-of-10 from downtown. Clayton Jewell put together a massive performance as the freshman saw action in a season-high 30 minutes topping his season-best with 19 points and 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. 

Senior Brandon Jackson provided 17 points and 10 rebounds while hitting three shots from beyond arc. Freshman Yorgio Golesischipped in with 13 points to round out the four double-digit scorers for the Stars while racking up a game-high eight assists. 

OCU saw its best shooting night of the season with a season-best 52.2% from the field while also notching a season-high 48.1% from deep. 

Oklahoma City will look to carry on its momentum into Saturday with a huge game against UNT-Dallas at 3 PM inside Abe Lemons Arena.
