PITTSBURG, KAN. -- Oklahoma City University men's and women's indoor track & field athletes wrapped up action in the Ninth Annual Gorilla Indoor Classic Saturday (Feb. 10) at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
Kanyon Cobbs headlined the day for the Stars with two performance as he ran off to a seventh place finish in the 600 meters. Cobbs was clocked in at 1:13.41 before placing 22nd in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.41, an NAIA B standard time.
Damien Williams placed in the top 20 in two events as the freshman finished 16th overall with an NAIA B standard time in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:34.80 to edge out teammate Elijah White who came in 25th place with a time of 8:42.33. Williams finished his day in the 5000 meter race coming in the 18th spot at a time of 15:03,38 coming in ahead of teammates
Halen Biggs (33), Elijah White (35), and
Beckam Hartis (37).
To wrap up the men's side in the field,
Ethan Vandevier placed fifth overall in the high jump with his second best jump of the season at 1.91m (6' 3.25")..
On the women's side,
Louise Cocking set a new personal record placing the highest among the Stars women coming in at 10:07.95 to earn a sixth place finish. Cocking also found a sixth place spot in the 5000 meters at a time of 17:53.61 in her first time competing in the race this season.
OCU also garnered two top 20 finishers, first coming in the 60 meter dash as
Shawna Smith slotted into the 13th position setting a new personal best of 7.91. Sophomore
Vanessa Perez set a new personal record in the 400 meter coming in 19th overall with a time of 58.21.
Daryn Batts surpassed her shot put distance from a week ago in the Washburn Open with a toss of 13.20 meters to earn a ninth place slot.
Oklahoma City sent a handful of student-athletes to the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle. On the men's side
Brendan Robeaux set a new personal best in the mile with a time of 4:09.58, coming in the 56th overall and fourth overall among NAIA runners.
Tate Smithhart racked up the best finish among the Stars who competed in the classic solidifying a 33rd overall spot with a time of 1:55.47 in the 800 meters.
Cailey Jolley was the only Star on the women's side to make the trip to Washington as the senior competed in the 800 meter race for the first time this season while placing 55th with a time of 2:16.10 qualifying for an NAIA A standard time.
OCU will compete in the Arkansas Qaulifier coming up this Friday, Feb. 16 in Fayettville, Ark.
