Wilson fuels Stars to three-point victory over Panhandle

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Stars Men's Basketball team gutted out a three-point victory behind its gritty defensive performance on Thursday night in a 66-63 win over OPSU.

STAR OF THE SHOW: Brandon Wilson became the only Stars to knock down multiple threes on a 16-point night from the junior out of Los Angeles to go along with five rebounds and one steal.

STAT OF THE GAME: Oklahoma City held Oklahoma Panhandle State to 63 points, the second fewest scored by an opponent against the Stars all season after holding Langston to 61. 

FIRST HALF: Oklahoma City opened with the first four points of the night in the opening 80 seconds of play before being held without a basket for the next three two minutes until Clayton Jewell tied the game at six. Panhandle held a one point lead with just over 12 minutes remaining as the Stars began to heat up with six straight points as Jack McWilliams and Nick Bonifay provided sparks off the bench with back-to-back buckets inside the paint. OCU held its lead for the remainder of the half going up by as much as six after a pair of free throws McWilliams before Panhandle closed the gap at 36-34 heading into the break. 

SECOND HALF: OPSU turned the tides out of the locker room heating up for a 10-2 run going up by six five minutes in. It took six more minutes for OCU claim back the advantage after a steal by Beau Tranter leading to a Brandon Wilson layup in transition. The two sides remained within three points of each other eventually knotting itself up 58-58 with 3:52 to go. Clayton Jewell put the Stars in front with a jumper from the nail before Wilson extended the OCU lead with his second three of the night to go up five with 2:37 left. The Aggies turned right back around to tie things up after five straight points of their own as Amaree Brown knocked the down the game-tying three with 1:55 left. The stout OCU defense locked up the opposition for the rest of the way keeping OPSU off the board while Avery Jackson put OCU up two before Tranter converted one free throw on two attempts as the Stars finished off the Aggies with one last defensive stand to come away with a 66-63 victory. 

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City snapped its two-game skid moving to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play. 
  • Clayton Jewell tabbed his third game in a row scoring in double-figures with 15 points on the night with an efficient 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. 
  • Jack McWilliams and Nick Bonifay gave the Stars huge life off the bench as McWilliams went for eight points and a season-high six rebounds while Bonifay notching a season-best five points with one three. 
  • Avery Jackson supplied nine points for the Stars while taking away a season-high four steals. 
  • Oklahoma City had its highest amount of bench points with 20 on Thursday night.
NEXT TIME OUT: Oklahoma City gets back into action on Saturday playing host to Wayland Baptist at 4:00 PM inside Abe Lemons Arena.
