Evangels clamp Stars in final game of 2024

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Men's Basketball team struggled to get anything going in the final game before break as Mid-America Christian cruised to a 69-58 victory inside Abe Lemons Arena on Saturday afternoon. 

TOP PERFORMERS
Avery Jackson - 16 PTS, 2 REB, 5-9 FG
James Cloud - 12 PTS, 6 REB, 2-4 3PT
Brandon Wilson - 10 PTS, 10 REB, 2 BLK

STAT OF THE GAME: Brandon Wilson notched his sixth double-double of the season after scoring 10 points while hauling in 10 rebounds. Wilson accumulated double-digit boards for the seventh time this season bringing his season average to 8.7 per game, second best on the team behind Clayton Jewell with 9.4. 

FIRST HALF: Oklahoma City saw its biggest lead of the night come two and a half minutes into the contest on four straight points by Clayton Jewell to open the game 4-0. The Stars maintained its advantage all the way up until Quentin Woodson put MACU on top with 12:53 to play which ignited an 8-0 run for the Evangels. Beau Tranter cut the deficit back to one with 9:58 on the clock standing as the last OCU bucket for over the next six minutes of play as the drought allowed Mid-America Christian to pull away to a 19 point lead. The Stars scored just five points in the final 10 minutes of the first half as MACU took a 40-19 advantage into the halftime break. 

SECOND HALF: Brandon Wilson scored the first eight points of the half for the Oklahoma City while the Evangels continued to have an answer for everything coming their way. MACU extended its lead to as high as 25 points with 3:08 to go while life off the bench for OCU brought the deficit below 15 for the first time in the half. Oklahoma City ended the night on a 15-1 run highlighted by back-to-back threes from Lawrence Taylor Jr and James Cloud closing the gap to an 11 point margin as the contest came to an end with MACU on top. 

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City moves to 8-5 overall and 4-5 in conference play dropping its second straight game and falling the fourth time over the last five contests. 
  • Avery Jackson finished with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting while going 5-for-7 from the free throw line. 
  • James Cloud finished one point shy of tying his season-high after scoring 12 points to go along with six rebounds. 
  • Oklahoma City dropped its third straight meeting against Mid-America Christian as the Evangels hold a narrow 20-18 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 2005. 
NEXT TIME OUT: Oklahoma City will pick up play in the new year against Texas Wesleyan to finish off the five-game homestand on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 8:00 PM inside Abe Lemons Arena.
