Bennett swats seven, Stars struggle to close in loss to Langston

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Women's Basketball suffered its second consecutive loss inside Abe Lemons Arena on Thursday night in a 55-51 defeat to Langston.

STAT OF THE GAME: After setting its season-high of seven blocks as a team on Monday, Oklahoma City was able to top that number with a total of 12, the most in a game since Jan. 20, 2018. 

FIRST QUARTER: Oklahoma City used a 9-0 after Langston started with a 4-0 lead as Raegan Travis provided five points during the Stars run helping boost her seven point quarter where she knocked down one three. The Stars went on to take a 13-9 lead after freshman Brooke Curry cashed in on a triple with 2:54 to play before Langston closed the gap on the deficit and tie the game at 15 all to end the quarter. 

SECOND QUARTER: It was an offensive struggle for both teams in the second quarter as Oklahoma City outscored Langston 11-7 through 10 minutes of play. Langston made just one field goal on 16 attempts while OCU was only able to knock down two from the field on just six shot attempts while going 7-for-12 from the charity stripe. Cacie Gorman came away with four points in the quarter to lead the team while OCU took a 26-22 lead into the break. 

THIRD QUARTER: Oklahoma City raised its lead to as much as seven points in the third quarter however Diamond Richardson of Langston began to take things over scoring eight of her 16 points in the quarter. The Lions won the period 15-13 closing the cap to two points heading into the fourth. 

FOURTH QUARTER: Oklahoma City held on to its lead up until Richardson put the Lions in front with 2:39 to go as Langston took its first lead since the 8:55 mark in the second quarter. Jerney Bennett was able to knot things back up at 49 before Langston would close out the game on a 6-2 run Mikayla Woods shut things down with a pair of free throws to put the game away. 

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City falls to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in SAC play dropping its second consecutive contest.
  • Oklahoma City shot 2-of-3 from beyond the arc with Raegan Travis and Brooke Curry cashing in.
  • Raegan Travis came away with a season-high 15 points while shooting 5-of-9 from the floor. 
  • Amaya Gordon posted her third straight game reaching double-figure scoring with 12 points while dishing out a season-high of six assists. 
  • Jerney Bennett scored double-digits for the sixth game in a row with 11 points on the night while swatted away an astounding seven blocks. Bennett notches the most blocks in a game by a Stars player since Taylor Sylvester in 2018.
  • Cacie Gorman tallied up six points for the fourth game in a row while hauling in five rebounds and tabbing a season-high four blocks. 
NEXT TIME OUT: Oklahoma City travels north to McPherson, Kan., where the Stars will take on Central Christian at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
