Four Stars reach double-figures, OCU hangs on to knock off #5 Oklahoma Wesleyan

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City men's basketball team capitalized off Thursday's victory by taking down the #5 team in the country in Oklahoma Wesleyan as Yorgio Golesis and Avery Jackson split with 19 points each.

STAT OF THE GAME: Oklahoma City put together a strong night from the field shooting at a 48.4% clip (30-62).

STAR OF THE SHOW: Sophomore from Darwin, Austrailia Clayton Jewell was all over the place tabbing his fourth career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks. 

FIRST HALF: Oklahoma City found itself starting to heat up by knocking down a trey on three straight possessions from Yorgio Golesis, Avery Jackson and Brandon Wilson. Oklahoma City went on to complete the 10-0 run after Wilson nailed two more threes giving him nine points through the first nine minutes of play. Oklahoma City was able to maintain its double-digit lead as Golesis sank his second three of the half just before time expired to give OCU its largest lead at 48-35.

SECOND HALF: Oklahoma City continued to keep the pedal down as the Stars worked their way to a 20 point lead as Beau Tranter, Lawrence Taylor Jr and Golesis all contributed to growing the lead. The Eagles, ranked fifth in the country for a reason, came crawling back with a 16-4 run that brought the Stars lead to single digits for the first time since there was 54 seconds left in the first half. Avery Jackson went on to score nine straight points for OCU including a three point foul shot that put Oklahoma City back up by 12 with 3:51 remaining. Oklahoma City made its last field goal in the 5:14 mark allowing OKWU to inch closer once again cutting it to as little as three after Talton Derrick Jr hit a shot from distance. The Stars were able to close out the game from the foul line after James Cloud grabbed a massive offensive board leading to knocking a pair of free throws. Jackson secured the win by going 2-for-2 from the stripe to make it a six point game with nine seconds left leading to an 87-81 win over the #5 Eagles. 

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City had another stellar showing from the free throw line shooting 19-for-21 while having its highest percentage (90.5%) since Feb. 17 of last season against USAO. 
  • Coming off a career-high, Avery Jackson tallied 19 points along with five rebounds while going 8-of-9 from the line. Jackson now brings his career scoring total to 989 points looking to surpass 1,000 on Saturday night. 
  • Yorgio Golesis matched Jackson with 19 points topping last night's total by one. 
  • Newcomer Brandon Wilson got more acquainted in game two as the junior dropped 13 points on three makes from downtown while hauling in the second most rebounds on the team with six. 
  • Oklahoma City trailed just one time in the contest when it was 12-10 OKWU with 13:40 remaining. The Stars saw their biggest lead of 20 points come eight minutes into the second half while scoring 17 second chance points. 
  • The win gave Oklahoma City its second victory over a top 10 team since last beating #10 Science & Arts on Feb. 19, 2022 in a 103-12 thriller. 
NEXT TIME OUT: Oklahoma City will conclude the Abe Lemons Classic tomorrow evening at 5:00 PM as the Stars take on Mission inside Abe Lemons Arena.
