Stars drop season-opener to #5 Concordia in Cattle Classic

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City women's basketball team dropped its season-opener of the 2024-25 campaign in the Cattle Classic against #5 Concordia. 

TOP PERFORMERS
Amaya Gordon - 15 PTS, 5 REB
Raegan Travis - 8 PTS, 5 REB
Taryn Cottrell - 9 PTS, 4 REB, 3-3 3PT

STAT OF THE GAME: Oklahoma City had a strong night on the glass out rebounding the Bulldogs by one coming up with 41 board on the night as five Stars grabbed four or more rebounds. 

FIRST QUARTER: Concordia jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead as the Stars first basket came with 5:38 to go on a jumper by senior Amaya Gordon. The Bulldogs extended their lead all the way up to 17 points trailing 21-4 with 2:13 remaining. Oklahoma City went on to score the next five points before Concordia used a three-point play to finish off the quarter with a lead of 24-9 as Gordon scored six of the OCU nine points in the first period.  

SECOND QUARTER: Falling behind by 17 points just over three minutes in, Oklahoma City found a burst of offense using a 7-0 run as freshman Brooke Curry broke into the books with her first three-point basket of her career. OCU cut the deficit back down to single digits before Concordia shot right back up to a 15 point lead just before the break. 

THIRD QUARTER: Out of the locker room both teams struggled offensively as Concordia outscored Oklahoma City 13-12 in the quarter. Neither side knocked down a three while OCU forced five Bulldog turnovers as Jerzie Bryant, Ray Osborn and Jerney Bennett all came up with steals. Raegan Travis led all scorers with five points after working her way to the line six times while sinking three of the attempts. 

FOURTH QUARTER: In the final quarter, Oklahoma City could only cut the deficit to 13 points as Concordia took as much as a 21 point lead. Amaya Gordon had another strong quarter putting up six points by going a perfect 3-of-3 from the field while freshman Taryn Cottrell came off the bench and shined by knocking down three triples scoring nine straight OCU points. 

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City\shot 35.6% from the field while sinking four threes on 12 attempts.
  • Amaya Gordon held a game-high 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting while grabbing five rebounds. 
  • Taryn Cottrell started off her collegiate career with nine points on three fourth quarter threes.
  • Cacie Gorman led the team with six rebounds while scoring six of her own. 
  • The two schools met for the first time on Friday night as Concordia took the inaugural meeting by a 14 point advantage.
