Stars fall in three sets to Texas Wesleyan

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Oklahoma City volleyball team suffers its second straight sweep by falling in three to Texas Wesleyan on Saturday.

STAT OF THE MATCH: Natalie Adams dished out a team-high 17 assists reaching double-digit dimes for the 11th straight match.

THE RUNDOWN

Set 1
The opening set began as a back and forth affair as the largest lead was three up to the point of being tied 12-12. Texas Wesleyan put together a 4-1 run forcing Oklahoma City to take a timeout, however the Rams kept the momentum alive with six straight points on two kills to take a lead of 22-15. OCU was able to rattle off three in a row on a kill by Rylee Steward and an ace by Grace Smallwood that cut the deficit to four. Texas Wesleyan would go on to score the next three of four points as the Rams captured a 25-19 victory.

Set 2
Ruby Kelley put the Stars in front at 5-4 before a 10-2 run from Texas Wesleyan that gave the Rams a lead of 14-7. Oklahoma City scored back-to-back points only once in the set on points three and four as Kelley tallied three kills in the second set while Michela De Stefano and Maddie Edwards pitched in as well. Texas Wesleyan scored the final four of five points going on to win 25-12.

Set 3
OCU had a strong start to the third set as an ace by Kailtyn Dunlap and a kill by Kelley helped the Stars to three straight points while Bailey Lowder closed out a 4-1 run with a kill of her own. Texas Wesleyan secured its first lead since it was 1-0 after scoring five straight points with two kills coming from Hanna Rubis. The Rams held its largest lead of the set at 20-15 but Oklahoma City began to claw its way back on three consecutive scores started by a kill from Steward. Trailing only by two Oklahoma City saw its chances drift away as Texas Wesleyan went on to score the next five points to close out the match with a third set win of 25-18. 

Game Notes
  • With the loss, Oklahoma City moves to 7-10 overall and 7-4 in conference play. 
  • OCU tied its season-low from the first game of the season against Hastings in kills with 24 while the Rams tallied a total of 45. 
  • Ruby Kelley led Oklahoma City with nine kills for the second match in a row while also leading the Stars with 2.0 blocks. 
  • Grace Smallwood and Kaitlyn Dunlap tallied 12 digs apiece as Dunlap posted 12 total for the second straight contest while Smallwood came up with three kills and one ace. 
Up Next
Oklahoma City returns back home next weekend as the Stars will begin the second half of conference play against John Brown on Friday night at 6:00 PM.
