Kelley's 15 kills lead Stars in sweep over Panhandle

GOODWELL, Okla. - The Oklahoma City Stars volleyball team put together a three-set victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State and swept the season series over the Aggies after beating them in four sets back in the middle of September.

Set 3: 25-19 (OCU)

STAR OF THE SHOW: Ruby Kelley came up one dig shy of a double-double after posting 15 kills and nine digs on Friday night. Kelley's 15 kills was her most in a three-set match all season long while also having three blocks and two aces. 

THE RUNDOWN

Set 1
The two teams opened the match going back and forth in the scoring before OPSU scored three in a row to force an early OCU timeout. Oklahoma City fell behind 12-5 before Bailey Lowder started a 4-1 run by the Stars soon to be followed up with another 4-1 run as Ruby Kelley capped it off with a kill to cut the deficit to two. Trailing 17-13, Oklahoma City caught fire by scoring seven straight points as Rylee Steward pitched in with two kills as the Stars took a lead of 20-17. OCU was able to ride the momentum into finishing off the set with five in a row on kills from Steward, Maddie Edwards and Grace Smallwood who wrapped it up to secure a 25-19 win in the first set. 

Set 2
Close once again in the early going, Oklahoma City began to pull away with a 5-1 run as the freshman Lowder added two more kills to help the Stars get out to a 14-8 advantage. OCU kept the scoring going by taking its biggest lead of 10 points after an ace by Ruby Kelley to which the Stars avoided any Panhandle comeback winning the set 25-17. 

Set 3
OPSU put together a 4-0 run right out of the gate before OCU could take its lead of 8-7 after kills by Smallwood and Steward. Trailing 13-12, OCU rattled off four points in a row in the middle of a 6-1 run after two kills by Lowder followed by Marina Kalajdzic and Kelley to take a 17-14 lead. Looking to shut things down with a 21-18 edge, Oklahoma City finished with a 4-1 run as Steward delivered the match clinching kill to sweep the Aggies with a 25-19 win in the third set. 

Game Notes
  • The win brought OCU to .500 for the first time this season with a 10-10 overall record while holding a 10-4 record in conference play.
  • Oklahoma City had its second most kills in a three-set match this season holding a 44-26 kill advantage over the Aggies. 
  • OCU tallied 41 assists in the match, its highest number in a three-set match this season as Natalie Adams and Jaiden Downey combined for 39 of the 41. 
  • Natalie Adams led the night with 21 assists making it the third straight game Adams has gone over 20 assists.
  • Jaiden Downey dished out 18 assists the most she has had in a three-set match this year.
  • Rylee Steward tied a game-high of four blocks tying her second-most this season while posting eight kills.
  • Grace Smallwood notched double-digit digs for the fourth straight match with a total of 10 while having seven kills. 
  • The win earned the season sweep over the Aggies after beating OPSU in four sets back in September. 
  • The Stars win their fourth concesutive match against Panhandle while moving the all-time series record to 16-2 dating back to 2006.

Oklahoma City will look to sweep the weekend and earn its fourth win in a row tomorrow afternoon at Wayland Baptist Baptist starting a 1:00 PM.
