Stars sink 17th ranked Evangels after second half surge

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City women's basketball team pulled off the upset over #17 MACU in exciting fashion as Jerzie Bryant led the way with career-highs in points with 23 and assists with five helping Oklahoma City to a 75-69 victory.

Oklahoma City (5-9, 4-4 SAC) picked up its third straight win over MACU and got back to .500 in conference play. The Stars utilized a 24-point fourth quarter to propel the squad to a 75-69 victory over the Evangels (10-4, 4-4 SAC) inside Abe Lemons Arena.

OCU combined for 42 points in the second half as Amaya Gordon led the way in the fourth quarter with eight points while going 4-6 from the field to finish out the game.

Freshman Jerzie Bryant scored seven of her career-best 23 points in the pivotal fourth period. She finished the contest with not only a career-high in points but also tallied a career-high in assists with five.

Once trailing by nine points, Bryant gave Oklahoma City its first lead of the night with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter shifting all of the momentum towards the Stars direction, capping off a 10-2 run.

Holding a one-point lead, freshman point guard Lauren Rowan knocked down one of the biggest shots of the night with a three-pointer from the left wing to give OCU a four-point lead.

Under a minute to play MACU senior Jaci Calavan cashed in a shot from beyond the arc that cut the OCU lead to just three. Once again, Rowan delivered when it was needed the most with another clutch three-point bomb that gave OCU a six-point lead with 31 seconds to play. Rowan's three helped Oklahoma City put the nails in the coffin as the Stars sunk their free throws down the stretch to pull off the upset over the number 17 team in the land.

Lauren Rowan gave Oklahoma City a boost that was much needed as the freshman guard delivered nine points with seven rebounds and three assists while also pitching in a blocked shot.

Amaya Gordon came in behind Bryant as OCU's second-leading scorer with 14 points and six rebounds while shooting 5-13 from the field and going a perfect 4-4 from the foul line.

Senior Cacie Gorman rounded out four different Stars to reach double figures as Gorman racked up 10 points and became one rebound shy of a double-double while also picking up two blocks on the defensive end.

As a team, Oklahoma City tied a season-high in three-point makes and in assists after going 5-19 from range and assisting on 14 baskets.

The stifling OCU defense forced MACU to a season-low of just one three-pointer and a season-low of only two assists.

With the win, Oklahoma City earned its third straight victory over the Evangels as head coach Kris Seigenthaler remains unbeaten against MACU since being at the helm. The victory helps move the all-time series to 33-3 in favor of the Stars dating back to 2007.

Oklahoma City will look to keep its winning streak alive as the Stars hit the road on Saturday to take on Southwestern Christian at 2 PM in Bethany, Okla.
