Men's soccer shuts out Saints in home opener

Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City men's soccer team pitches a shutout in the home opener with two goals coming late in the match to defeat Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday night.

First Half   

In the first half of the play, Our Lady of the Lake controlled the majority of the possession and had many chances to score. The Saints took 11 shots to the Stars' two. Luckily for Oklahoma City Danilo Vilani, the Stars goalie, was on his game with six saves in the first half alone. Midway through the first forty-five, Henrique Duarte took the Stars only shot on-goal for the half but the Saints goalkeeper Dominic Pena denied Durate's shot at it. The defense by both teams was played to an elite level as neither team could get on the scoreboard heading into the locker room.  

Second Half   

Out of the half, the two squads began to play more physically showing their aggressiveness to find ways to score. OCU began to take more tries at it as Sage Trevino and Keita Kishino gave their attempts but came up empty. With the second half of playing winding down getting into the final 20 minutes and still no score, Oklahoma got out on the attack as junior David Imbert sent a cross into the box with Bernardo Duarte securing the pass and kicking it into put the Stars in front with the first goal of the match at the 75th minute of play. It didn't take long for OCU to strike again as the Stars had a corner kick opportunity. Imbert chose to send a short pass out of the corner to senior Jordan Da Costa who sent a shot from distance into the net off the bounce in the 78th minute giving OCU a 2-0 lead. Our Lady of the Lake ran out of time to find a way back into things as the Stars shut out the Saints to win their 2023 home opener and second game of the year.  

Games Notes   

  • Despite being shut out Our Lady of the Lake took a total of 20 shots with nine on-goal attempts to Oklahoma City's 10 shots with five coming on-goal.  
  • Senior Human Performance major Jordan Da Costa scored his first goal of the season coming in the 78th minute. Da Costa competed in a season-high 90 minutes of action.  
  • Bernardo Duarte two took two shots on goal and got one to go in for his first goal of the season.  
  • After getting the hat trick two games ago at Bethany, David Imbert made his impact having both assists on the goals from Duarte and Da Costa.  
  • OCU goalie Danilo Vilani guarded his goal to perfection on Saturday night as Vilani notched a season-high nine saves to help the Stars shut out Our Lady of the Lake.  
  • In the all-time OCU secured its third straight win with its third consecutive shutout over Our Lady of the Lake. The win brings the series record to 5-2-2 dating back to 2012. 

NEXT GAME   

The Oklahoma City men's soccer team will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 4 against Ottawa (Kan.) at Brian Harvey Field at 2:30 PM.
