Women's soccer notch a season-high six goals as Stars storm past Rams in SAC opener

Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City women's soccer team opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a big 6-2 win over Texas Wesleyan as six different Stars got in on the action and found the back of the net.

First Half    

It took 10 minutes for the game's first score as OCU took a 1-0 lead as Hallie Crom netted her first goal of the season on an assist from Abby Russell. In the 23rd minute, the Rams tied things up with a goal from Gracie Spradley. Nearing the end of the first half OCU retook the lead once and for all as a header from Amelia Horsford put the Stars up 2-1 from the crossing assist from Russell yet again.  

Second Half    

Through the first 20 minutes, neither side could get on the board until the sister-to-sister connection came through for the Stars as Ashley Russell assisted her sister Abby Russell to go ahead 3-1. Five minutes later the Stars struck again as Reese Roberts secured her third goal of the season to extend the lead. Texas Wesleyan later cut the lead in half as Spradley notched her second goal of the night in the 76th minute. Oklahoma City had a little more left in the tank as the match entered the final 10 minutes of play. Into the 80th minute, Gisselle Estrada gave OCU its fifth goal of the night as Estrada earned her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Yami Ponce. One minute later OCU scored its sixth and final goal of the evening as Ruby Nichols caught the cross in from Horsford to score her second goal of the season OCU went on to a 6-2 victory as time expired.  

Games Notes    

  • Oklahoma City took 21 shots with 12 on-goal attempts as Texas Wesleyan shot 10 times with four coming on-goal.   
  • Abby Russell scored her team-leading fifth goal as well as picking up two assists to finish with four points on the night.  
  • Amelia Horsford netted her first collegiate goal on the header late in the first half. Horsford also notched her second assist of the season.  
  • The Stars scored a season-high six goals, tying their most goals since Oct. 25, 2022, in a 6-2 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State.  
  • OCU extends its winning streak to six straight wins over Texas Wesleyan moving the all-time series record to 16-9 dating back to 2003 in favor of the Stars. 
  • Oklahoma City's six goals was the second most the Stars have scored on Texas Wesleyan in the series history falling two goals short of the highest total of eight set in 2021.  

NEXT GAME    

The Oklahoma City women's soccer team will be back in action to finish off the six-game home stand on Saturday, Sept. 30 against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 5 PM.
