Stars fall to Firestorm in largest defeat of the season

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma men's soccer team suffered its largest loss of the season as the Firestorm caught fire in the second half with four goals handing the Stars their first loss since Aug. 30.

First Half   

After taking three shots the Stars finally caught a break as Jordan Da Costa sent a ball down the field finding Jayson Riley in the open field Riley made a couple of swift moves and sent the ball into the back of the net to put the Stars up 1-0 in the 20th minute. It didn't take long for the Firestorm to catch back up as Aiden Abbitt shot a ball from deep in the box getting it to go in to tie the game at 1-1. Marco Alongi and Bernardo Duarte, both gave it a try but came up empty nearing the end of the half as the two squads made their way into the locker room all knotted up at one apiece.  

Second Half   

Arizona Christian came out of the halftime break on a mission as the Firestorm scored within the first five minutes with a goal from Tiago Soares. ACU kept the momentum going as they picked up three more goals over the next 40 minutes with makes from Marlon Arce in the 53rd minute, Nate Macaluso in the 72nd minute, and Aiden Abbitt once again in the 86th minute after catching a ball off the crossbar and sending it on its way in to go ahead 5-1. Oklahoma City took six shots in the second half with three coming on goal but struggled to find the netting as the Stars couldn't overcome the heavy amount of scoring from Arizona Christian.  

Game Notes   

  • Arizona Christian outshot the Stars with 21 shots to OCU's 14. ACU took 11 on goal and took 15 shots total in the second half alone. Oklahoma City took only six shots on goal while taking seven shots in each half.  
  • OCU took three corner kicks whereas Arizona Christian had a total of five corners all coming in the first half.  
  • Junior from Johannesburg, South Africa Jason Riley cashed in his first goal of the season and the first in an OCU uniform. Riley put the Stars on top early for its only goal and lead of the afternoon.  
  • Goalie Danilo Vilani faces a season-high 11 shots while allowing a season-high five goals. Vilani finished with six saves in a full 90 minutes of play.   
  • The Stars allow a season-high total of goals surpassing the previously season-high total of four, set by Southwestern College on Aug. 30. 
  • Saturday's contest was the first all-time meeting between the two schools as Arizona Christian takes the first-ever win in the matchup.  

NEXT GAME   

The OCU men's soccer team will wrap up its non-conference schedule on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7 PM as the Stars will take on another Arizona school in a matchup against Ottawa University at Brian Harvey Field.
