Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer drops season-opener to Missouri Baptist 3-0

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City women's soccer team nearly outshot Missouri Baptist twice as much, but struggled to find the net in the season opener on Saturday resulting in a 3-0 shutout loss.

First Half 

Both teams started the match strong defensively as neither team could get any chance to get a shot on goal. Oklahoma City shot four times before Missouri Baptist even had a chance to go for the goal however the Stars could not find the back of the net.  

With under nine minutes to go in the first half and no score the Spartans put themselves on the scoreboard with their second shot of the day as Abby Layton gave Missouri Baptist a 1-0 lead off the assist from Madi Dunahue.  

After the goal, the defenses turned back up and neither side could get a shot attempt sending the contest into the halftime break with a 1-0 score in favor of Missouri Baptist.  

Second Half 

Oklahoma City native Reese Roberts came firing taking two shots in the 49th and 52nd minute of play, however, Roberts could not find the net as Spartans goalie Gabby Mattli made two great saves denying Roberts a chance of scoring.  

In the 59th minute, Missouri Baptist caught a break with a shot in the box going off the hand of an OCU defender giving the Spartans a penalty kick try. Maddie Mrazik cashed in the PK to extend their lead to 2-0.  

More shots kept coming from the OCU side as freshman Roberts kept firing and McLain Moss went for it as well however nothing doing for the Stars as Mattli was letting nothing go by her on the day.  

With the contest going into the final 10 minutes of play Missouri Baptist tacked on another goal in the 81st minute with the goal coming from Morgan Hollenbeck assisted by Paige Rice to put the game away 3-0.  

Games Notes 

  • Oklahoma City almost doubled the amount of shots taken over Missouri Baptist as the Stars took 11 shots total with five coming on goal as opposed to the Spartans taking a total of six shots with five coming on goal.  
  • Missouri Baptist goalie Gabby Mattli had a solid day defending the goal with a game-leading five saves with Gemma Harvey having two saves on the OCU side. 
  • OCU freshman Reese Roberts led all players in shots taken with four as two came on-goal. 
  • Another Oklahoma City native Yami Ponce took three shots in her collegiate debut with Abby Russell taking two shots and McLain Moss taking one that came inches away from going in.  
  • Saturday's contest was the first-ever meeting between the two squads as Missouri Baptist picked up its first win of 2023 after taking a loss to MId-America Christian on Thursday as OCU fell in the season opener going to 0-1. 

NEXT GAME 

The Oklahoma City women's soccer team will have a quick turnaround as they head to Lindsborg, Kan., on Monday to take on Bethany College at 5 PM.
