BELLEVUE, Neb. – Oklahoma City University continued its hot streak with a 5-2 win over Doane (Neb.) on Monday at Don Roddy Field in the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Bellevue Bracket.
The Stars (31-19) have won 13 out of their last 16 games dating back to their series against Southwestern Christian in mid-April. OCU advanced to a 3:30 p.m. contest Tuesday against fifth-ranked Bellevue (Neb.). Oklahoma City improved to 14-7 against top 25-ranked competition after its win over 18th-ranked Doane.
Eli Davis shut the Tigers down with a career-best nine-inning complete-game performance. Davis, a senior left-hander from Shawnee, Okla., majoring in criminal justice, reached double figures in strikeouts for the fifth time this year, picking up 12 strikeouts. Davis (12-2) allowing one earned run and four hits while piling up 135 pitches. He retired eight consecutive batters from the fifth to the seventh innings and worked 1-2-3 innings in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
OCU got on the board first as
Noah Kang stole second base, then reached third on the throwing error by the catcher.
Aiden Alexander stole third and scored on the error. The Tigers came back with a run of their own off two hits and a walk.
After three straight 1-2-3 innings, the Stars got on the board with the long ball from
Jesse Fonteboa. An inning later they added another run as
Hunter Lenochan scored on a wild pitch after his double to lead off the inning.
OCU added two more in the eighth inning as
Trent Kiraly singled through the middle of the infield.
Tristan Williams drove home
Colin Pelton on a sacrifice bunt.
Doane added one more in the ninth on a fielder's choice.
OCU picked up 11 hits with
Felix Chenier-Rondeau leading the way by going 3-for-5. Kiraly put in a 2-for-5 showing with one RBI, while Ratchford went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Alexander provided a 2-for-4 outing with one run. Lenochan went 1-for-4 with a run, and Fonteboa had the one RBI on his home run.
