OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University clipped Science & Arts 2-0 on Friday night at Ann Lacy Stadium in a showdown of teams ranked among the top 10 in NAIA softball.
Science & Arts, ranked ninth in the NAIA, took the nightcap of the doubleheader 9-2 as the Stars split the four-game series this year. Seventh-ranked Oklahoma City moved to 33-7, 20-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
In the early game, Lexi Duff delivered the winning hit by pounding a two-run single to the right-field wall over right fielder Lauryn Cottrell. Brooklyn Mason and Analise Rayburn raced home on Duff's base hit with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Stars' Shelbey Cornelson outlasted Sophie Williams in the pitching duel. Cornelson, a senior from Tuttle, Okla., studying exercise science, collected seven strikeouts while allowing four hits in her eighth complete-game shutout of the year. Cornelson improved to 17-2 in 2023.
Cornelson struck out the side in the first inning and fanned Slater Eck on a called third strike with runners on second and third base to end the top of the fifth. The contest remained a scoreless tie until two out in the sixth.
The Stars extended their winning streak to 15 games. Tiffany Paul, a sophomore exercise science major from Choctaw, Okla., crushed a double and a triple in the first game. Mason, a senior from Lone Grove, Okla., majoring in nursing, went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.
In game 2, Jaycee Kievit hit a three-run home run to put the Drovers up 5-0 in the first inning.
Oklahoma City got the scoreboard as Mason reached home plate on Carlee Mollet's groundout in the second.
Amy Crabaugh hammered a solo blast over the left-field wall with two out in the bottom of the sixth. Paul went 3-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases.
The Stars face Central Christian (Kan.) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
