FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University fended off Texas Wesleyan 15-13 on Friday at Sycamore Park.
Trent Kiraly hammered two home runs and knocked in seven runs for OCU. The Stars improved to 15-13, 7-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference baseball.
Kiraly drove in Oklahoma City's first three runs. In the third inning, Kiraly crushed a two-run homer to left field to tie the game 3-3. Kiraly nailed an RBI double to right in the first. The Stars took the lead 6-3 as Felix Chenier-Rondeau delivered a double into center with the bases full.
In the sixth, Kiraly bashed a grand slam beyond the left-field fence for a 10-3 OCU advantage. Barrett Daniel's solo shot to left put the Stars on top 11-3.
OCU plated four runs in the eighth. Hunter Brown launched a sacrifice fly into center field, and Hunter Lenochan knocked in another run on a base hit to center. The Stars led 15-7.
Texas Wesleyan rallied with five runs in the bottom of the ninth. After Jonathan Pena hit a sacrifice fly to left, Noah Kang caught Carson Cheany looking at strike three to finish the game.
Kiraly, a junior from Farmington, N.M., majoring in finance, went 3-for-5 and scored three times. Daniel, a junior biomedical sciences major from Bixby, Okla., turned in a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Rondeau, a junior from Blainville, Quebec, Canada, studying psychology, posted a 3-for-5 performance with three runs scored, three RBIs and two doubles, while Lenochan, a sophomore business administration major from Edmond, Okla., put together a 3-for-5 showing with one run scored and one RBI.
Eli Davis snagged the victory. Davis, a senior left-hander from Shawnee, Okla., studying criminal justice, struck out eight in 6.2 innings. Davis improved to 6-2. Grant Harrison and Kang also took the mound for OCU.
The Stars face Texas Wesleyan in a doubleheader noon Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
