OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University captured its first win with Keith Lytle as head baseball coach 11-3 over Clarke (Iowa) on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Lytle assumed the head-coaching role after 34 years as OCU assistant, contributing to Oklahoma City racking up the most victories in college baseball since 1991. The Stars, ranked 11th in the NAIA, split the doubleheader after Clarke took the second game 3-2. OCU moved to 1-4.
In the first game, Felix Chenier-Rondeau, Jesse Fonteboa and Chad Pike each hit home runs for the Stars. Rondeau crushed two homers, including a fifth-inning grand slam that put OCU ahead 10-0. Oklahoma City posted season highs with 11 runs and four home runs.
Rondeau powered his second homer of the game beyond the right-field wall. Rondeau, a junior from Blainville, Quebec, Canada, studying psychology, nailed a solo blast to left in the fourth to give the Stars a 6-0 advantage. Rondeau scored the first run of the contest on a wild pitch in the first inning.
In the third, Oklahoma City built a 5-0 lead. With one out, Pike crushed a three-run shot over the right-center field wall. Hunter Brown added a sacrifice fly to left-center field.
Fonteboa pounded a lead-off homer to left-center field in the sixth to provide the Stars an 11-0 margin.
Eli Davis notched his first victory of the season by working 5.2 shutout innings. Davis, a senior left-handed criminal justice major from Shawnee, Okla., struck out nine while giving up two hits and three walks. Davis improved to 1-1 this year. Anthony Kopecky closed out the win on the mound, working out of a bases-loaded situation in the sixth.
Rondeau posted a 3-for-3 effort with four runs scored and five RBIs, while Tristan Williams, a senior business administration major from Southlake, Texas, scored two runs. Fonteboa and Trent Kiraly each went 1-for-2.
In the second game, Kiraly and Pike smacked homers. Pike, a senior business administration major from Southampton, N.Y., pounded a shot over the left-field wall in the third inning.
Kiraly, a junior finance major from Farmington, N.M., clouted a solo blast to left with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Johnny Blake's homer put the visitors ahead 3-1 in the top of the sixth.
Andrew Limbaugh lasted the first 5.2 innings for the Stars. Grant Harrison, a senior right-handed business administration major from Jones, Okla., retired Clarke in order the final 1.1 innings.
The Stars conclude the series against Clarke at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
