OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rolled to a 6-0 victory over MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) on Friday at Jim Wade Stadium in a matchup of teams ranked among the top 15 in NAIA baseball.
Eli Davis and Isaac Horstman combined on the Stars' first shutout of the year. OCU, ranked 11th, moved to 5-6, while No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene fell to 1-7 in 2023.
Davis, a senior left-handed criminal justice major from Shawnee, Okla., limited MidAmerica Nazarene to three hits and four walks while striking out seven in seven innings pitched. Davis (2-1) retired the Pioneers in order in the second and the fourth innings and struck out the side in the seventh. Horstman, a sophomore righty from Albuquerque, N.M., majoring in exercise science, fanned three in two innings.
Trent Kiraly pounded a two-run home run beyond the left-field wall to put OCU ahead 5-0 in the third. Noah Kang had a grounder that allowed Colin Pelton to reach home plate in the fourth.
The Stars took a 3-0 advantage in the first when Jesse Fonteboa hit a fly ball to right field that Sean Maple dropped near the foul line to bring three runners home.
Kiraly, a junior finance major from Farmington, N.M., went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Kiraly, Aiden Alexander, Hunter Brown, Felix Chenier-Rondeau and Chad Pike each hit doubles.
The Stars meet MidAmerica Nazarene at 2:30 p.m. Saturday following a game between Doane (Neb.) and MidAmerica Nazarene beginning at noon at Jim Wade Stadium.
