OCU vs. Southwestern Christian men's basketball preview

Stars play final home game of season

THE MATCHUP
 
• Oklahoma City University faces off against Southwestern Christian in the second to last game of the regular season
• The Stars stand in fifth place in the SAC with hopes of hosting a playoff game
• OCU seniors Dravon Clayborn, Kori Guest, Dadrian Hoambrecker and Zach Lerblance will be recognized for their contributions over the years to the program
• Oklahoma City last visited the Noble Complex for an exhibition against Oklahoma Baptist which the Bison won 71-64 on Oct. 31, 2019. OCU's last regular-season game that took place at Oklahoma Baptist was an 80-77 decision won by OBU on Feb. 14, 2015. The Stars' last win at the Noble Complex came Jan. 16, 2014, when OCU knocked off Oklahoma Baptist 66-65 on Terry Johnson's trey with 4.7 seconds remaining

ABOUT THE STARS
 
• OCU owns a record of 14-12, 12-8 (SAC)
Kori Guest led OCU with 20 points against JBU in their last game as the Stars were downed 87-69
• Guest is averaging 15.4 points per game
• OCU had an early 10-point advantage and trailed by five at the half. They went on a four-minute scoreless drought in the fourth quarter ended by a Parker Jones three pointer
• Stars average 15.5 free throws made per game which is 21st in the NAIA
• The Stars came in seventh in the preseason SAC coaches poll. OCU owns 13 SAC regular-season championships and 10 SAC Tournament titles. Oklahoma City has advanced to the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament 25 times all-time and has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008
• OCU's all-time record against their cross-town rival is 17-3 with the Stars having the upper hand
• The Stars defeated the Eagles 85-70 on Jan. 12. Brandon Jackson led with 23 points. Four Stars posted double-figure points
 
ABOUT THE EAGLES
 
• Southwestern Christian owns a record of 10-13, 8-12 (SAC)
• The Eagles were downed 72-71 on Saturday against UNT Dallas
• Shawn Hopkins led with 21 points. Hopkins averages 16 points per game
• The Eagles average 24.4 free throw attempts per game which is 4th in the NAIA
• Southwestern Christian took 9th in the SAC Preseason Coaches' Poll
 
MEET THE COACHES
 
 
Mark Berokoff (second season with OCU, 30-27) 

• Mark Berokoff directed Oklahoma City to a 17-14 record in his first season as the Stars' head coach. The Stars collected the No. 3 seed in the SAC Tournament and earned their most conference wins since 2009-10 with a 15-7 mark 
• Berokoff directed Randall to three national championships and a national runner-up showing in nine years as head coach of the Saints. Berokoff led Randall to a 147-122 mark. Randall annually squared off with SAC teams and knocked off OCU twice in that span  
• Berokoff produced five national player of the year honorees, 16 all-Americans, three national tournament outstanding player award winners and one scholar all-American with Randall. Berkoff became two-time national coach of the year  
• Berokoff's coaching career spans the high school, college and professional levels. His combined head-coaching record over 20 years in the college and prep ranks was 389-213 entering the 2022-23 season 
 
Brandon Rollins (fourth season with SCU, 45-55) 

• Southwestern Christian has lost all six meetings against OCU under Brandon Rollins 
• Prior to Southwestern Christian, Rollins held an assistant coaching position at Mid-America Christian, where he helped lead the Evangels to the 2016 NAIA Division I national championship. He spent one season as an assistant coach at Southwestern Christian under Quinn Wooldridge and one season as an assistant coach at Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City 
• Rollins played collegiately at SCU, appearing in 89 games for the Eagles after they joined the NAIA in 2010-11

• Andrew Himes will offer commentary. Himes enters his 12th season as the voice of the Stars and has been broadcasting OCU basketball for 15 years starting on color commentary as an OCU student
