FREMONT, Neb. – Oklahoma City University's Sophia Smith snared the Midland Warrior Open 130-pound crown Sunday at Hopkins Arena.
Three wrestlers placed in the tournament for Oklahoma City, ranked 19th in NAIA women's wrestling. The Stars' Eseta Sepeni grabbed second at 191 pounds, while Iby Garcia came in fourth at 116.
Smith posted a 5-0 record, winning her first career tournament title 2-0 over Emily Paulino of host Midland (Neb.) in the championship final. Smith, ranked 11th among NAIA 130-pounders, defeated the 15th-ranked wrestler at her weight, Paulino, and 18th-ranked Alexandra Baudhuin from Jamestown (N.D.) on Sunday.
Smith finished her semifinal match against Baudhuin in 4:42. Smith produced her quickest fall of the season in 27 seconds against Madeleline Sargent of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.). Smith, a junior from Janesville, Wis., majoring in philosophy, improved to 18-7 on the season.
Sepeni fell short to Missouri Valley's Keilani Corbett, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA at 191 pounds, 10-0 in the championship final. Sepeni, a freshman nursing major from Hermiston, Ore., advanced to the title bout with a 6-4 win over Marissa Patterson. Sepeni holds the 15th spot in the national rankings at her weight.
Garcia came up with two falls Sunday. Garcia, a freshman business administration major from Las Vegas, reached the third-place match with a fall against Brittany Cotter from William Penn (Iowa) in 2:21. Garcia, ranked 18th in the NAIA at 116, pinned William Penn's Grecia Martinez in 1:59.
The Sooner Athletic Conference Championships take place Feb. 25 in Fort Worth, Texas.
