OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Stars women's basketball dropped another close one on Thursday night as
Ray Osborn's layup stayed in her hand just a hair too long on the last-second shot as the Stars fell 55-54 to Wayland Baptist.
OCU started the night off on fire with an 8-0 run right out of the gate as
Ray Osborn scored four of the first eight points for the Stars. Closing out the first quarter the Flying Queens began to chip into the lead with four consecutive points. However, a corner three by
Myracle Washington pushed the Stars out to 17-11 as the Stars closed the first quarter with the lead as Osborn scored eight points and eight minutes of action.
Wayland Baptist took its first lead of the evening at the 7:52 mark on a layup from Taylor Houston who finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Stars put together a 6-0 run midway through the second half as Osborn,
Jerzie Bryant, and
Amaya Gordon all pitched in to retake the lead. The score traded hands for the rest of the way until Wayland Baptist finally took the lead for good as the Flying Queens took a two-point lead into halftime.
Oklahoma City came out in the second half having a hard time finding the bottom of the net seeing a drought of almost six minutes without scoring and going down by 12 points had the Stars facing their largest deficit of the contest.
Down by 10 to start the final quarter OCU began to fight its way back as Gordon ignited a 10-1 to bring the Stars down by just one. Wayland Baptist stayed out in front and held a one-point lead as the game dwindled into the final minute of play. Neither team was able to score down the stretch as Oklahoma City got the ball on their side after a pair of missed free throws gave the Stars a chance to win the game.
Coming out of the timeout Oklahoma City had 1.4 seconds to make a move as head coach
Kris Seigenthaler went in the direction of top-scoring senior
Ray Osborn. Osborn made the catch on the short corner while trying to beat the clock, drove baseline, and laid it up only for the time to expire just before Osborn could get it out of her hand. OCU suffered another heartbreaking defeat as the Stars took the one-loss Flying Queens squad all the way down to the wire.
Ray Osborn was cooking from start to finish as the senior ended up tying her previous career-high of 17 points which was last set on Jan. 21, 2023 against Wayland Baptist.
Amaya Gordon earned her third double-double of the season tonight as Gordon went for 12 points and 10 rebounds while shooting a perfect 4-4 from the foul line.
OCU held Wayland Baptist in check from beyond the arc holding the Flying Queens to just one made three-pointer on 10 attempts while shooting 34.5% as a team from the field.
Oklahoma City dropped its eighth straight contest in the series against Wayland Baptist as the last win for the Stars hasn't come since Nov. 23, 2019.
Despite the loss, OCU remains in front in the all-time series with a 22-19 lead over the Flying Queens.
With little time to rest Oklahoma City gets ready to return to action on Saturday, Dec. 9 inside Abe Lemons Arena for a date with Oklahoma Panhandle State.
