Columbia College pulls away in overtime for 76-68 win over Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Stars women's basketball team took Columbia College, who is receiving votes in the NAIA poll to overtime after Jerzie Bryant sent the game into overtime with a three-point buzzer beater, however, the Stars fell 76-68 in extra time. 

Oklahoma City (2-6, 1-2) took a quick lead after the ball was tipped and maintained a close score throughout the quarter. Columbia College (9-2, 3-0) got out to an 11-1 run to extend its lead to 16-7. OCU came right back at the Cougars with a 6-0 run to close out the first quarter with Jazmin Adams knocking down back-to-back layups to close the gap to 16-13. 

OCU got up by as much as three in the second quarter after a Jerzie Bryant three-pointer but a 9-2 run for Columbia and a drought of 2:25 second for the Stars allowed the Cougars to take a 31-25 lead into the break. 

Coming out in the second half Columbia remained in front with one tie occurring after another Bryant three-pointer. After the Cougars jumped out to a six-point lead to open the fourth quarter the Stars strung together an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the second half. 

The score began to trade hands until a big three-pointer by Abby Backes gave Columbia a two-point lead. Down the stretch, Columbia missed some key free throws giving the Stars a chance to tie down by three. With just a second to go Adams found Bryant for a deep three-pointer as Bryant attempted the last-second shot from beyond the arc and as the buzzer sounded the ball majestically made its way through the net to send the game into overtime. 

In the overtime period, Oklahoma City was held scoreless for over the first four minutes as Amaya Gordon gave the Stars their first and only basketball of overtime. Columbia College outscored Oklahoma City 10-2 in the overtime to squeak out a 76-68 win in extra time. 

Jazmin Adams and Jerzie Bryant led the way for the Stars with 16 points each as Adams hauled in eight rebounds and a season-high three blocks. Bryant scored 16 after sinking two threes, one being the buzzer-beater that sent the contest into overtime. Bryant finished with seven rebounds and three steals.

Cacie Gorman tallied a new career-high six blocks as the senior also provided six points and rebounds. Another senior Ray Osborn was the other Star to reach double-figure scoring as Osborn collected 12 points with three assists and five rebounds. 

Mallory Shetley from Columbia seemed to be unstoppable after having the hot hand all evening by scoring a game-high 33 points while going 12-22 from the field and 7-9 from the free throw line. 

The Cougars top player Delaney Horstman had a big night inside giving her team 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. 

The Stars showed an excellent fight against Columbia College, which is receiving votes in the NAIA poll. The two teams met on Tuesday night for the first time in 20 years with the last meeting coming in 2003. 

Oklahoma City suffered its first-ever loss to Columbia College however remains in front in the all-time series with a 2-1 record over the Cougars. 

OCU will pick right back up on Thursday night in the Sooner Athletic competition against Wayland Baptist at 6 PM inside Abe Lemons Arena.
