Dominate second half defense gives Stars big win in season-opener

OKLAHOMA CITY - Amaya Gordon enjoyed a record-breaking opening day as the Oklahoma City Stars women's basketball team ran away with a 79-53 win in the season opener on Thursday inside Abe Lemons Arena.

OCU (1-0) jumped out to a lead of 6-4 over Wiley College (1-1) after a jumper from freshman Myracle Washington as the Stars never looked back and surrendered the lead the entire rest of the way.

The Wildcats began to close in during the first half however the Stars always seemed to have an answer as Ray Osborn, Jerzie Bryant, and Amaya Gordon all pitched in to help maintain the advantage as the Stars held a 37-30 lead at the half.

Coming out of the locker room the OCU defense turned up a notch by allowing only nine points from the Wiley side as Gordon diced up 13 points in the third quarter alone to help OCU take its largest lead of the day at the end of the third quarter.

Oklahoma City continued its defensive terror in the fourth quarter by only giving up 14 points to the Wildcats and taking a lead by as much as 29. OCU wrapped things up in the season-opener winning 79-53 after dominating the second half.

Amaya Gordon enjoyed a record-breaking day while reaching a new career-high 22 points as well as achieving her highest total number of free throws made as Gordon went 8-11 from the line. Gordon was able to solidify a double-double after having a monstrous night on the boards with 13 rebounds.

Ray Osborn and Jerzie Bryant both had identical nights from the floor as both scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting.

Myracle Washington had a stellar day in her collegiate debut as Washington came off the bench to fuel the Stars with 18 points and four threes.

OCU shot 25-51 from the field while shooting above 50 percent in the second half. The Stars defense turned itself up by not allowing Wiley to make a field goal in the third quarter as Oklahoma City held the Wildcats to just 31.6% shooting.

Head coach Kris Seigenthaler mentioned "For the first time hitting the hardwood with a lot of new players this is a huge win for our Squad. In the second half, we really started to show how we are built defensively, holding Wiley to 23 points." Seigenthaler goes on to say, "I am excited for this squad to take on the next challenge against Kansas Wesleyan on the road."

The Stars will be back in action next Wednesday, Nov. 8 away from home against Kansas Wesleyan at 6 PM in Salina, Kan.
