Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Kansas Wesleyan expands on early lead handing OCU its first loss of the season

SALINA, KAN. - Kansas Wesleyan jumped out to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in handing the Oklahoma City University women's basketball team its first loss of the season on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma City (1-1) fell behind early and could never find its way back as Kansas Wesleyan (2-3) was ushered by a strong night from the field shooting 51.8%. The Coyotes were led by LaMyah Ricks with 17 points on 7-9 shooting while the team had 12 total players pitch in on the scoring.

OCU struggled offensively early on and never found its way back as the Stars went seven minutes without a basket until Ray Osborn knocked down a pair of shots from the charity stripe to end the long drought.

The Stars cut the deficit to as low as 10 in the third quarter after an Annalynn Bohner splash from three-point range, however, the Coyotes stood their ground and extended the lead back up once again to put the Stars out of reach.

OCU was led by senior guard Ray Osborn who tied her career high of 17 points on 7-13 shooting to go along with four rebounds while going 3-4 from the free throw line.

Amaya Gordon reached double figures for the second consecutive contest as the senior shot 4-10 from the field while hauling in six rebounds.

Cacie Gorman played a major role in the trenches tonight as Gorman led both teams in rebounding with a season-high nine boards while notching three blocks.

Overall, the Stars struggled to get anything going offensively putting them in a deep hole to climb out of in the first half. After shooting 24-33 from the free throw line and 5-12 from deep in the season-opener, OCU only made nine trips to the foul line while cashing in on six of those attempts and went 1-9 from beyond the arc.

Wednesday night's affair was the first-ever meeting between the two schools as Kansas Wesleyan earns the upper hand in the inaugural contest.

Oklahoma City will return home after the one-game road trip for its homecoming matchup as the Stars will look to bounce back against Friends University at 2 PM on Saturday, Nov. 11.
