PLAINVIEW, TEXAS – The Oklahoma City women's soccer team claimed a pair of late goals as the defense shined in the 2-0 win over Wayland Baptist on Saturday afternoon.

First Half
Oklahoma City controlled the possession early as the Stars took three corners and one shot in the first 10 minutes. OCU remained in control and had a couple of chances to score Abby Russell took two shots on goal that were saved by the Wayland goalkeeper. Jimena Martinez took the next two shots on goal for the Stars late in the first half that also came up to be saved. OCU came close to scoring many times but came up empty. However, the Stars defense shined brightly as the Pioneers failed to get off a single shot in the first half and the two squads went into the halftime break scoreless.
Second Half
The Stars came out on the attack as McLain Moss took a chance on goal and Reese Roberts took two shots on goal which all of them came out to be vetoed by the Pioneers keeper. After many tries coming up empty the junior Sydney Hawkins nailed her first goal of the season in the 78th minute to break the scoreless tie as OCU took a 1-0 lead. It was long after Hawkins goal that OCU struck again with Russell finding the net off the assist from the freshman Yami Ponce as OCU pulled away 2-0. Wayland Baptist took its first and only shot in the 82nd minute as Gemma Harvey rejected the attempt and the Stars closed out the match with a 2-0 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Oklahoma City took 14 shots with 11 coming on goal while Wayland Baptist attempted only one shot which came on goal.
- Sydney Hawkins scored her first goal of the season as the junior clinched the game-winning goal in the 78th minute of play.
- Abby Russell once again finds the back of the net as Russell scores her eighth goal of the season to extend her team lead.
- The Oklahoma City defense locked down the Pioneers as Wayland Baptist only got off one shot which ties the lowest number of shots OCU has allowed this season.
- OCU earns its seventh shutout victory of the year, making it the most shutouts that OCU has had in a single-season since 2016.
- Oklahoma City wins its second consecutive match over Wayland Baptist as the Stars take a 19-4 advantage over the Pioneers in the all-time series dating back to 2001.
