Stars late goal leads to 1-0 win over Southwestern Christian

BETHANY, OKLA. - The Oklahoma City women's soccer team earn a late victory at Southwestern Christian as Abby Russell sends OCU to a 1-0 victory with a game-winning goal in the 85th minute.

First Half      

Oklahoma City got out on the offensive attack early as Hallie Crom took a shot on goal 36 seconds into the contest in which was saved by the Eagles goalkeeper. The Stars continued to take their chances but could not score in the first half of the game. The OCU defense was able to hold Southwestern Christian scoreless as the Eagles took just two shots with one coming on-goal. OCU took a total of five shots with two on goal attempts along with four corner kicks. Neither side could sink one through sending the first half of the match into the locker room scoreless.  

 Second Half  

Coming out in the second half OCU six shots with two on-goal attempts while Southwestern Christian was limited to three shots with only one shot on-goal. Late into the second half the match remained scoreless until with five minutes to go as Reese Roberts advanced the ball up to Abby Russell inside the box who made a move and sent a shot over the hand of the goalkeeper and into the net to clinch the game winning goal in the 85th minute. The OCU defense clamped down the rest of the way and did not allow another shot from the Eagles to send the Stars on to a late 1-0 victory.  

   

GAME NOTES  

  • Oklahoma City took 11 total shots with four shots on-goal while Southwestern Christian attempted seven shots with only two coming on-goal.  

  • Abby Russell tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the season with her game-winner in the 85th minute.  

  • Gemma Harvey and Irene Gonzalez both split time in goal with both keepers picking up a save each. 

  • After having their four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday against John Brown the Stars bounce back to stay unbeaten against SCU since their first meeting back in 2013. 

NEXT GAME  

The Oklahoma City women's soccer team will stay on the road for its next contest against Wayland Baptist on Saturday at 1 PM.
