MARSHALL, Mo. – Cade Manion topped Oklahoma City University in the Missouri Valley College Invitational men's wrestling tournament with a third-place finish at 141 pounds Saturday at the Burns Center.
Oklahoma City tied for 18th place in the team standings with 48.5 points. Drake Vannoy added a fourth-place finish at 157 pounds for the Stars.
Manion, a sophomore criminal justice from Edmond, Okla., knocked off Eastern Oregon's Jaxon Morlan 4-1 in the third-place match at 141. Manion reached the third-place bout with a 3-1 win over Jordan Mitchell from Life (Ga.) in sudden victory.
On the day, Manion turned in a 6-1 mark with a major-decision win and win by fall in the tournament. Manion pinned Eli Leonhardt of Northwestern (Iowa) in 2:29. Manion (10-2) holds the No. 3 spot in the NAIA's 141-pound rankings.
Vannoy led the Stars with two falls in the tournament. Vannoy, a junior nursing major from Jenks, Okla., pinned Raymond Aranda III from Midland (Neb.) in 1:30 and Michael Lucas of Benedictine (Kan.) in 2:45. Vannoy, ranked 18th in the NAIA at 157 pounds, went 6-2 with two victories by major decision over the weekend. Lucas was ranked 22nd nationally.
Hayden Brown became the other OCU wrestler to put together a winning record in the tournament at 3-2.
Oklahoma City takes on Oklahoma Wesleyan on Wednesday in Bartlesville, Okla.
