OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University's first loss of the women's soccer season came at the hands of Baker (Kan.) with a final score of 2-1 on Sunday at Brian Harvey Field.
Abby Russell delivered the Stars' lone goal of the contest. Oklahoma City fell to 3-1 on the year.
The game got off to a slow start with only seven shots on goal in the first half combined. Grace Reese got her first start at goalkeeper for the Stars this season. Reese saved the first shot on goal by Baker in the ninth minute, but failed to corral the next as Kayley Pedersen snuck by it by her for the first goal of the game just before 20 minutes had passed on the game clock.
The Stars had just three shots and one on goal in the first half before Russell lasered the ball over Baker goalkeeper Taylor Evans' head at the 43-minute mark. Saizlee Carlton was credited for the assist.
OCU came out in the second half with two quick shots getting saved. It was a close match with the ball going back and forth until Macie Albright of Baker scored the winning goal right before the end of the game at the 88-minute mark. Reese came out to defend Albright, and she slid the ball right under a diving Reese for the goal.
Overall, both teams ended with six totals shots, and Evans and Reese each had two saves.
The Stars' next matchup will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Bethel (Kan.). The Stars' next home matchup will be two days later against Southwestern (Kan.) at 5 p.m. Sept. 10.
