OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University come out on top against Bethany (Kan.) on the first game of the women's soccer season 2-0 on Wednesday at Brian Harvey Field.
Sofia Carvajal Granados was the brightest Star of the competition, scoring both goals for OCU in the win. Granados' first goal came in the 20th minute off a perfect assist from Ciana Carlton.
Granados got the ball, conducted some fancy footwork, and beamed the ball right between the goalkeeper's legs for the Stars' first goal of the season.
Backed by some top-notch defense, the Stars held onto the lead until they were able to add on to it. In the 52nd minute, Granados notched her second goal off a penalty kick. Mackenzie Nutter, the keeper, moved left, and Granados kicked the ball right.
The Stars attacked the net all game with 18 shots accounted for compared to Bethany's 10.
With Sydney Hawkins as their designated corner kicker for the game, the Stars had a total of seven corner kicks on the night compared to Bethany's three.
April Hill led the team with five shots and came mere feet from a goal in the second half. Sofia Granados had four shots, and McLain Moss had three.
Irene Gonzalez showed up when needed, adding three saves in her OCU debut.
The Stars' next game will be 6 p.m. Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan with their next home game being against Randall at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
