OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University started the 2022 men's soccer campaign off right with a 4-1 victory over Bethany (Kan.) at Brian Harvey Field on Wednesday.
Lucas de Freitas posted the first goal of the night, while Jusung Kang collected two assists for Oklahoma City (1-0).
The Stars showed their speed and aggression early on as de Freitas, a senior from São Paulo, Brazil, got the early goal in the eighth minute off Kang's first assist on the night.
De Freitas had another golden opportunity to capitalize on a goal after a yellow card in the penalty box in the middle of the first period.
Kang's second assist came in the 21st minute after tapping the ball across the penalty box right to John Woodhead for his first goal on the season. The Stars' third goal would come in the 43rd minute off the foot of freshman defender Olly Clifford from England.
K.J. Masso came on as goalkeeper and immediately see action as he barely missed a save on a ball that went over his glove three minutes into the second half. He had five saves in the second period. Danilo Vilani started the match and ended with three saves.
The Stars recorded 14 shots in the first period compared to six for Bethany. OCU ended with 20 shots.
The shot chart showed Woodhead with five shots, followed by Sage Trevino with four and de Freitas with three. Trevino delivered the Stars' final goal in the 74th minute using Jordan Da Costa's assist . Trevino attacked the goal the whole second period, nearly missing on two of his four shots prior to getting his fourth one to sneak by the goalie.
