OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University seized an NAIA Softball World Series bid with a 6-1 triumph over Eastern Oregon on Wednesday in the NAIA Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket.
Oklahoma City secured its 33rd World Series trip behind a three-run fifth inning. The Stars (50-6) became the No. 2 seed and will play 4 p.m. CDT (5 p.m. EDT) Friday, May 27 in the NAIA Softball World Series in Columbus, Ga.
Shelbey Cornelson finished the tournament pitching three complete games for OCU. Cornelson, a junior from Tuttle, Okla., gave up one run on five hits and three walks while striking out six Wednesday. Cornelson kept nine batters in a row from reaching base from the second inning until two out in the fifth. Cornelson maintained her perch among the NAIA leaders with her 33rd victory, moving to 33-3 this year. She maintained a shutout until the seventh inning.
Over the previous week, Cornelson keyed the Stars with a 3-0 mark, 0.86 earned run average and 26 strikeouts in 21 innings. She allowed nine hits and three walks as foes batted .123 against her.
OCU got out to the early lead as Tiffany Paul nailed an RBI single into right center in the first inning. Kennedy Jackson led off the game with a base hit, then collected her 203rd career stolen base. Jackson scored on Paul's hit.
With two outs in the fifth, Rally Radacy pounded a run-scoring single to left. The Stars used a passed ball and wild pitch to move ahead 4-0.
In the sixth, Kaitlyn Jones scored on Mallory McCoy's groundout. Jackson reached home plate in the seventh on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder.
Jones, a junior from Edmond, Okla., posted a 2-for-3 day and scored a run. Jackson, a senior from Moore, Okla., scored twice. Jackson remains 10 steals away from tying the NAIA career mark set by Britney Webb from Belhaven (Miss.) in 2007-10.
OCU's World Series contest pits the Stars against the winner of Thursday's Southeastern (Fla.)-Webber International (Fla.) game.
