OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University edged Mid-America Christian 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday night at Ann Lacy Stadium.
OCU, ranked second in NAIA softball, knocked off Mid-America Christian 8-0 in the first game of the twin bill. The Stars improved to 27-2, 13-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
In the second game, OCU drew back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases with two out.
Nicole Robinson scored the winning run as the 2-0 pitch skipped off catcher Hannah Robbins' glove. Robbins' attempt to get Robinson out at the plate went errant to allow the Stars to escape with the sweep.
Tiffany Paul drove in the tying run with a base hit to right-center field with two away in the fifth. Janessa Larman smashed a home run just fair of the left-field foul pole to give Mid-America Christian a fourth-inning 3-2 edge.
In the third,
Rally Radacy launched a fly ball to right field to bring home
Kennedy Jackson to tie the game 2-2. Jackson led off the inning with a double to right-center, then swiped third base.
Lexi Duff provided OCU its first run of the nightcap with a two-out RBI single to left in the first.
Jackson, a senior from Moore, Okla., posted a 2-for-3 night with two runs scored.
Shelbey Cornelson snatched the win in both ends of the doubleheader by pitching the final 3.2 innings. Cornelson (16-1) held Mid-America Christian without a hit, allowed one walk and struck out six in the second game. Cornelson struck out the side in the fifth and retired the last seven Evangels in order.
In the first game, the Stars plated three runs in the second inning.
Mallory McCoy nailed an RBI double to left, then Robinson doubled to right-center to put OCU ahead 3-0 with two out.
In the third, Paul launched a solo shot beyond the left-field wall. McCoy smacked an RBI single to right-center.
Kaitlyn Jones, a junior from Edmond, Okla., posted a 3-for-3 outing with two runs scored, while Robinson, a senior from Rochester, Ill., went 2-for-2 with an RBI. McCoy, a junior from Mustang, Okla., turned in a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and three runs driven in, and
Brooklyn Mason, a senior from Lone Grove, Okla., went 2-for-3, tripled and scored twice.
Cornelson, a senior from Tuttle, Okla., allowed two hits and a walk while shutting out Mid-America Christian over five innings. Cornelson fanned five.
The Stars face Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday in Waxahachie, Texas.
