JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Destiny Lyng from Oklahoma City University rallied to capture the 143-pound individual national championship in the NAIA women's wrestling invitational on Saturday at Harold Newman Arena. 

Lyng, a senior from La Mesa, Calif., edged Emma Walker from Campbellsville (Ky.) in the championship final at their weight. Lyng completed the season 27-2 including a come-from-behind win in the semifinals Saturday. 

In the championship bout, Lyng tallied the final five points of the match to seize the national title. Lyng racked up two takedowns and a stepout in the final 45 seconds after facing a 5-0 deficit with 1:19 to go.  

Lyng made a takedown with 31 seconds remaining, then scored with 10 seconds remaining to even the score 5-5. Lyng became the national champion since she scored the last point in the match. Lyng, ranked second among NAIA 143-pounders, upended the top-ranked individual in her division. 

"She's the ideal athlete," OCU coach Nicole Tyson said. "She is a great leader. She is a hard worker. She cares about everyone. She is definitely a servant leader. She worked very hard to become and national champion and achieved her goals. She stays patient. It's nice for her to be an example to others that they don't need to panic in that situation. It shows her maturity in the sport. I'm very proud of her."  

In the semifinals, Lyng pinned Alexis Gomez of Grand View (Iowa) in 4:21. Gomez, ranked No. 3 at 143, went ahead 4-0 with a takedown with 2:38 remaining in the match. Lyng stuck a four-point move on Gomez, maintained her hold on Gomez, then worked for the fall.  

Lyng finished her career 73-23 with five all-America honors. Lyng joined Margaret Douma and Cassidy Jasperson as five-time all-Americans among the Stars.  

OCU came in 18th place as a team with 50 points.
