Stars Sweep Drovers In SAC Doubleheader Action

CHICKASHA, Okla. – No. 4 ranked Oklahoma City University swept No. 3 ranked Science & Arts in Sooner Athletic Conference action on Tuesday evening at Bill Smith Ballpark.

OCU (13-0, 4-0 SAC) won the opener 4-1 before posting a 5-3 come-from-behind win in the nightcap.

Senior designated player Lexi Duff lifted OCU to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opener with a RBI single, scoring senior shortstop Kennedy Jackson.

OCU loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third inning but the threat ended without the Stars extending the lead.

USAO evened the score at 1-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Amanda Moreno scored from second base after a throwing error to first by Jackson on a ground ball by Drover second baseman Sierra Selfridge.

USAO did not get a runner into scoring position the rest of the game after tying the score. The Stars advanced a runner to second base in the top of the sixth inning without scoring and the game went into the seventh tied 1-1.

Jackson led off the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. She then stole second base before advancing to third on a sac bunt by freshman third baseman Rally Radacy.

Freshman center fielder Tiffany Paul then laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt single to the third base side, pushing Jackson across the plate with the RBI and giving OCU a 2-1 lead. Duff then cranked a 2-run home run over the left field fence, her first of the season, to push the Stars to a 4-1 lead.

Junior Shelbey Cornelson retired the Drovers in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Stars and improve her record to 6-0 on the season. She allowed one run (unearned) on four hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts in a complete game effort.

USAO (7-4, 0-2 SAC) led 2-1 after six innings in game two, with OCU scoring its run on a home run by junior catcher Amy Crabaugh in the top of the fifth inning. It was her first homer of the season.

Crabaugh delivered a one-out, two-RBI double to left center in the top of the seventh to push the Stars to a 3-2 lead. OCU would load the bases with one out but the threat ended on fly out to left by Radacy and a ground out to second by Paul.

Sophie Williams led off the bottom of the seventh inning by reaching base on a catcher interference call. One out and three batters later, she scored on a RBI single by Macenzie Ruth to tie the score 3-3. Shyla Clouse was tagged out on that same play on an attempt to reach home after the ball was back in the infield.

USAO had runners on first and second base when the inning ended when Cornelson struck out Selfridge.

OCU scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to take a 5-3 lead, on a leadoff RBI single by Duff and a one-out RBI squeeze bunt by junior first baseman Mallory McCoy.

Cornelson, who relieved starting pitcher Duff with one out in the sixth inning, shutdown the Drovers in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win. She improved to 7-0 for the season after allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 2.2 innings of work.

Duff pitched well in a no decision outing, allowing two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks in 5.1 innings of work.

OCU returns to action this Friday in the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic at Hall of Fame Stadium. The Stars will get started by hosting Grambling and McPherson (Kan.) on Friday.
