Stars Improve To 11-1 With Doubleheader Sweep Over Bethany (Kan.)

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University wrapped a 5-0 weekend with a doubleheader sweep of Bethany (Kan.) on Sunday afternoon at Jim Wade Stadium.

OCU won the opener 4-0 before posting a thrilling 5-4 walk-off win the weekend finale.

In the opener Sunday, junior Jesse Fonteboa provided the Stars a 2-0 lead with his third home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Cross Factor pushed the lead to 3-0 with his fifth home run of the season in the third inning.

Sophomore Chad Pike capped off the scoring in the fifth inning on a hustle play when he scored from second base on a sac fly by senior Cade Stephens. The fly out was to the wall and Pike easily made it to third after tagging but scored after the Bethany centerfielder was a bit to casual in getting the ball back into the infield.

Senior Tanner Schoeninger (3-0) picked up with win with a complete game seven-inning effort. He faced only two batters over the minimum, allowing no runs on three hits (all singles) with three strikeouts and no walks.

OCU finished with seven hits with senior Noah Barks leading the way with two hits.

Bethany scored in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead in the series finale. OCU (11-1) took the lead with a 3-run third inning, scoring on a RBI double by Barks and 2-RBI double by Stephens.

With the help of an error, Bethany advanced runners to second and third base in the top of the fourth inning but the threat ended when junior third baseman Tristan Williams picked up a scorching ground ball off the bat of Swede batter Kenneth O'Farrill before making the toss to first base for the final out of the inning.

Bethany did take a 4-3 lead on a 2-RBI single by Tyler Freeman in the top of the fifth inning. The score remained the same heading into the bottom of the seventh at OCU's final at bat.

Barks started off the finale frame with a single to right field. OCU would work the bases loaded with two outs when senior Peyton Crispin stepped to the plate in a clutch situation.

Crispin did not draw out the drama. He delivered a sharp single to left field on the first pitch that drove in Barks and Factor, lifting the Stars to another walk-off win.

Senior Jacob Wright (1-0) entered the game with one out in the top of the seventh inning and earned the win. He retired the two batters that he faced.

Sophomore starter Connor Ferguson was solid in a no-decision role. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work.

OCU out-hit Bethany 8-4, with leadoff hitter Barks once again leading the squad with two hits.

OCU returns to action next Friday and Saturday with a home four-game series against Park Gilbert (Ariz.).
