Stars Stage Epic Comeback To Clip No. 10 USAO In Regular Season Finale

CHICKASAHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University stormed back from a late double-digit deficit to defeat Science & Arts 103-102 in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Drover Fieldhouse.

The win for OCU (16-13, 15-7 SAC) snapped NAIA No. 10 ranked USAO's (24-5, 19-3 SAC) eight-game winning streak.

The Stars held a 50-47 halftime lead but the Drovers fought back to post an 82-67 lead at the 9:32 mark of the second half. The home team's lead was 96-80 with five minutes remaining before OCU staged an epic comeback to secure the win.

The comeback started with back-to-back 3-pointers by senior guard Dravon Clayborn, the second one a step-back trey to cut the deficit to 96-86.

The Stars kept coming, taking the lead at 101-100 on lay-up by senior forward Romario Spence at the 1:09 mark. USAO then retook the lead at 102-101 on a couple of free throws with 53 seconds remaining.

Clayborn missed a 3-pointer on OCU's next possession but USAO's Rory Pantophlet traveled after grabbing a defensive rebound, giving the Stars a second chance.

OCU made the most of that chance with Spence scoring on a back-handed lay-up with seconds remaining on the shot clock to push the Stars to a 103-102 lead at the :28 mark.

The Drovers had two more chances to get the win but missed two shots, the second one a missed jumper by Gerard Makuntae with seconds remaining.

Only eight players saw action for OCU with all five starters all playing 30-plus minutes. All five starters also scored in double-figures.

Spence and senior guard Rashaun Coleman led the way with 24 points apiece. Clayborn finished with 22 points, junior forward Kori Guest with 16 points and senior guard Ryan Birt with 15 points.

OCU rolls into the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a two-game winning streak and 7-3 record over the last 10 games.

The Stars are the three seed for the tournament and will receive a first-round bye. OCU will host an opponent to be determined in the quarterfinal round at Abe Lemons Arena on Thursday.

The SAC Tournament bracket will be released on Sunday.
