OCU vs. Southwestern Assemblies of God men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP
  • Oklahoma City goes up against Sooner Athletic Conference foe Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) for the second of three games in Abe Lemons Arena this week
  • The Thursday match is the third of five matches in 10 days for OCU.
  • SAGU holds a 12-7 in the all-time series against OCU. OCU's last win came on Jan. 27, 2022, with a final score of 89-83 in overtime.
  • Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for students. All tickets must be purchased via OCU's HomeTown Ticketing portal. No tickets are to be purchased via cash on site. OCU students, faculty and staff gain admission to all OCU regular-season home athletics events free of charge with their ID  
ABOUT THE STARS
  • OCU holds a record of 5-6, 3-2 on the season
  • OCU escaped with a narrow 69-65 victory over John Brown (Ark.) in their last matchup on Tuesday night. Parker Jones sealed the win with a block on a potential game tying 3-pointer. He finished with seven points, three steals and five rebounds.
  • Brandon Jackson, a junior from Westmont, Calif., led all with 20 points and three steals. He is averaging 14.2 points and a team high 6.9 rebounds per game on the year.
  • JBU trailed by 20 early in the first half and outscored OCU 43-29 in the second half.
  • OCU ranks among the best in defensive rebounds per game with a 35th ranking in the NAIA
  • The Stars came in seventh in the preseason SAC coaches poll. OCU owns 13 SAC regular-season championships and 10 SAC Tournament titles. Oklahoma City has advanced to the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament 25 times all-time and has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008
ABOUT THE LIONS
  • SAGU holds a 7-3, 3-0 record for the second overall spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
  • The Lions are coming off of back-to-back loses against Science & Arts and Texas Wesleyan. They lost to the Rams 86-84 in overtime after the Lions fought back to tie it just before the buzzer.
  • Cortland Blake led with 28 points and eight rebounds. Blake averages 15.8 points per game
  • The Lions took the sixth over all spot in the SAC Preseason Poll
  • TWU ranks 12th in points per game, 23rd in steals per game, and 23rd in free throws made per game in the NAIA
MEET THE COACHES

Mark Berokoff (22-20, second season with OCU)
 
  • Mark Berokoff directed Oklahoma City to a 17-14 record in his first season as the Stars' head coach. The Stars collected the No. 3 seed in the SAC Tournament and earned their most conference wins since 2009-10 with a 15-7 mark 
  • Berokoff directed Randall to three national championships and a national runner-up showing in nine years as head coach of the Saints. Berokoff led Randall to a 147-122 mark. Randall annually squared off with SAC teams and knocked off OCU twice in that span  
  • Berokoff produced five national player of the year honorees, 16 all-Americans, three national tournament outstanding player award winners and one scholar all-American with Randall. Berkoff became two-time national coach of the year  
  • Berokoff's coaching career spans the high school, college and professional levels. His combined head-coaching record over 20 years in the college and prep ranks was 389-213 entering the 2022-23 season  
Delton Deal (fifth season, 107-42)
  • Delton Deal has a career college record of 244-130
  • Has produced three NAIA All-Americans
  • SAC Champions in 2017-18, 2019-20.
  • In 2007, he won the TAPPS 3A State Championship and was named the State Coach of the Year
  • Reached NAIA National Championship Fab Four round in 2020-21

  • Andrew Himes calls the action. Himes enters his 12th season as the voice of the Stars and has been broadcasting OCU basketball for 15 years starting on color commentary as an OCU student
