Stars fall short to John Brown

OCU's run in SAC Tournament comes to halt

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University bowed out of the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament following a 11-25, 34-32, 25-21, 17-25, 15-7 quarterfinal loss to John Brown (Ark.) on Tuesday night at Bill George Arena. 

Ruby Kelley posted 14 kills for the Stars. Oklahoma City went to 13-15 on the year. 

In the fifth and decisive set, Rylee Steward and Catelyn Vargas teamed on a block to cut John Brown's lead to 8-4. John Brown scored the first five points of the set.  

In the fourth set, OCU built an 11-4 advantage with a 5-0 run. Steward combined with Vargas on a block to spark the Stars spree and teamed with Emma Vance on another block during the run. Oklahoma City closed the set with five points in a row as Grundy pounded a kill to force the fifth set. Steward knocked down a kill, and Kelley had a solo block during the final run. 

In the second set, Vance served up back-to-back aces, then Vargas notched a block to put the Stars ahead 20-10. John Brown stormed back with a 14-3 run.  

Michela De Stefano crushed a kill to provide OCU a 32-31 edge, but John Brown smacked three kills in a row to complete the Golden Eagles' rally. 

OCU built an early 8-1 cushion. Steward nailed three kills during that stretch. Riley Winkler landed an ace to put the Stars on top 18-6. Dunlap added back-to-back-to-back aces, then Kelley and Vargas had a block to bring up set point at 24-10. 

Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., turned in eight digs and six blocks. Vargas, a senior from Lubbock, Texas, put together 12 kills, seven blocks and five digs.  

Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., totaled 11 kills and 10 blocks for her second double-double and double-digit block performance of the season. Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, produced 15 digs and three aces.   

Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., recorded her 10th double-double of the year with 26 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Cassidy DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, handed out 21 assists. OCU served up 12 aces for its fifth double-digit total of aces.
