SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University faces John Brown (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament.
The Stars hold the sixth seed in the SAC Tournament. The conference tournament quarterfinals will be held on campus sites hosted by the top four seeds.
The quarterfinal winners advance to the SAC Tournament semifinals Friday at the Sheaffer Center in Waxahachie, Texas, which also hosts the championship Saturday. Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) has assured itself a bid into the NAIA Championships Opening Round as the league regular-season champion. Another national-tournament bid will be up for grabs in the SAC Tournament.
Oklahoma City (13-14, 11-9 SAC) split the regular-season series with John Brown. The Stars rolled to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 win Aug. 31 at Abe Lemons Arena led by Rylee Steward's 14 kills. The Golden Eagles won 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 on Oct. 7 at Bill George Arena.
Ruby Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., has supplied the Stars with 2.83 kills, 3.05 digs, 0.67 blocks and 0.26 aces per set. Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., can break the Oklahoma City single-season record with her 1.12 blocks a set. Whitney Kress holds the single-season record with a 0.953 block average posted in 2006, when OCU reinstated the volleyball program. Steward, who has been SAC attacker and defender of the week this season, has turned in 2.17 kills a set and a .286 hitting percentage.
Kaitlyn Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, owns averages of 4.94 digs and 0.24 aces per set this year. Dunlap, the SAC defender of the week this past week, has collected three 30-dig performances, including a season-high 36 against Southwestern Christian on Aug. 30 in Oklahoma City. Emma Vance provides OCU with 4.68 assists, 2.17 digs and 0.34 aces a set, while Cassidy DeShong has accumulated 4.47 assists and 1.40 digs per set for the Stars.
OCU has taken six SAC Tournament championships in 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020-21. Southwestern Assemblies of God captured the SAC Tournament title with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 win over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Nov. 13, 2021 in Oklahoma City.
