OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell short to Texas Wesleyan 63-61 on Thursday evening at Abe Lemons Arena.
Fiona Wilson propelled OCU with 20 points. The Stars went to 1-2, 0-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball play.
Down 61-53 with 4:30 remaining, the Stars embarked on a comeback where OCU outscored Texas Wesleyan 8-2 in that final stretch. Wilson and Amaya Gordon each provided four points. Gordon delivered a transition lay-in off Elaine Witt's steal and feed to cut Texas Wesleyan's lead to 63-59 with 44 seconds left. Wilson added a basket that sliced OCU's deficit to 63-61 with 17 seconds to go.
"The toughness and fight was incredible tonight," OCU coach Kris Seigenthaler said. "The players executed the game plan and held an extremely athletic Texas Wesleyan team under five nationally ranked statistics. These players left it all on the hardwood, and I am just so proud of their tenacity."
In the second quarter, Annilia Dawn sank free throws to give the Stars a 26-17 advantage at the 4:30 mark. Texas Wesleyan reeled off an 11-2 run as Zarria Carter had back-to-back putbacks that tied the game 28-28 just before halftime.
Wilson, a senior from Greenland, Ark., posted a double-double with 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Gordon, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., totaled 14 points, five assists and two steals.
Cacie Gorman, a junior from Watonga, Okla., snatched up 10 rebounds for Oklahoma City. Dawn and Witt each tallied nine points.
The Stars square off with Science & Arts at 2 p.m. Saturday in Chickasha, Okla.
