WINFIELD, Kan. – Oklahoma City University cruised to a 74-49 victory over Southwestern (Kan.) on Friday evening at Stewart Field House in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference-Sooner Athletic Conference Clash.
The Stars handed Kris Seigenthaler the victory in her contest as a head coach. OCU has won its last seven season-opening games.
Oklahoma City limited Southwestern to 25.5 percent shooting from the field. The Stars held an opponent to a field-goal percentage below 30 percent for the first time since North Texas Dallas shot 20.3 percent against OCU on Jan. 29. OCU allowed its fewest points since defeating Langston 69-47 on March 3, 2020 at Abe Lemons Arena.
"The effort, hustle and toughness were incredible tonight," Seigenthaler said. "This team has such competitors, and when challenged, they took it on fiercely. Each game we are leaving our legacy. I am extremely proud of our players and coaches."
Annilia Dawn, a senior from Amarillo, Texas, paced Oklahoma City with 19 points and two steals. Amaya Gordon, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., turned in 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
Reese Grimsley, a sophomore from Goodyear, Ariz., came off the bench to collect nine points and six rebounds. Grimsley led the OCU substitutes in outscoring Southwestern 24-9 in bench points. Cacie Gorman snatched a game-high 12 rebounds, and Elaine Witt handed out five assists for the Stars.
In the second quarter, the Stars unleashed an 8-0 run that put OCU ahead 35-21 just before halftime. Witt, a sophomore from Dale, Okla., pushed the Oklahoma City margin into double digits by hitting a 3-pointer with 1:04 left.
Southwestern failed to score the final 2:26 of the game as the Stars increased their advantage to their largest of the evening at the end of the game.
