Stars win behind four first period goals

Caputo earns assist hat trick

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University hung on to defeat Wayland Baptist on Saturday at Brian Harvey Field by a final score of 4-3. The Stars moved to 9-1-2 on the season and remain undefeated in conference play.

The Stars offense came alive with two goals early and two goals mid-way through the second period to hold on for the win. Sofia Carvajal Granados had the Stars first goal in the 5th minute on the assisting Madi Caputo cross. Sydney Hawkins got involved in the 13th minute for a goal with Madi getting her second assist of the game. The goal by Granados was her 8th goal on the season. The goal by Hawkins was her third on the year.

Wayland Baptist tied the Stars shortly after with a goal in the 17th minute and a penalty kick goal coming off a hand ball in the box in the 36th minute. A mere four minutes and 30 seconds later the Stars got revenge with two goals of their own coming not even 30 seconds apart. Madi Caputo got the goal with Saizlee Carlton achieving the assist. The goal 25 seconds later was by Abby Russell with none other than Madi Caputo assisting. With that assist Caputo earned a first period assist hat trick and brought her season total to an outstanding 13 assists and 23 points. The goals by Madi and Abby were both their fifth of the year.

Wayland Baptist tried to stage another comeback with another penalty kick goal in the 78th minute. Irene Gonzales blocked the penalty, but Bruna Moureira was able to rebound it for a goal. Ultimately, the four scores in the first half were enough for the win.

Gonzalez finished the match with four saves on seven shots on goal. OCU ended with 25 total shots and 15 shots on goal. They won the shot count by five.

OCU heads to John Brown University for their next matchup on Saturday, October 15th at 1:00 p.m.  Their next home game is scheduled for October 18th against Southwestern Christian.
