OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University tied Mid-America Christian University, the top-ranked team in the SAC standings and the No. 2 ranked team in the NAIA coach's poll. With the tie, OCU is now 10-4-1, 6-2 on the season, and fourth in the SAC standings with two games remaining. The last time the Stars tied a ranked team was 3/16/21 against MACU with a final score of 1-1.
The first half featured 15 total shots with zero coming from the Stars and only one goal being scored by the Evangels in the 20th minute. The Stars had zero shots in the first half as MACU controlled the ball a good majority of the time. Out of all 15 shots MACU had only four of them were on goal.
The zero shot first half and one score deficient didn't let hinder the Stars as they came back with a goal in the 49th minute off a corner kick by
Jordan Da Costa that was headed in under the keepers' arms by
Ignacio Sarasol, the goal by Sarasol was his first on the year. The assist by
Gustavo Cardoso was his fourth. Once the second half started, the Stars would face another deficit as MACU scored in the 54th minute from 12 yards out.
Lucas de Freitas was the Star who came up clutch with an equalizer in the 64th minute after he took advantage of a misplay by the Evangels. He stole the errant pass and was alone for the breakaway goal from 24 yards out. The goal was his ninth on the season.
Jordan Da Costa came mere feet from a game-winning goal with less than 20 minutes remaining as he got control of the loose ball and shot it from just past midfield as the goalkeeper had moved up from his line. The ball sailed over the goal by no more than a few feet. The Stars also had another header goal taken back from an offsides penalty shortly after their game-tying goal.
Danilo Vilani kept the Stars in the game with a superb showing in both periods as he racked up 9 total saves with four in the first period and five in the second period. MACU only had two saves on the game which gives credit to their ball control and gives credit to the Stars' defensive prowess. Overall, the Stars finished with 10 shots, four shots on goal, and nine saves. The Evangels finished with 26 shots, eleven shots on goal, and two saves. De Freitas led the Stars with three shots.
OCU will play their last away game as they head to Goodwell, Okla., to play Panhandle State on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
