Stars Roll Past SAGU In Sooner Athletic Conference Play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University nearly led wire-to-wire in earning a 78-57 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) in Sooner Athletic Conference action on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.

OCU (13-7, 8-7 SAC) took the lead for good at 5-3 on a lay-up by senior center Abby Selzer at the 9:10 mark of the first quarter. The lead stood at 10-9 midway through the first quarter before the Stars went on an 8-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer at the first quarter buzzer by junior forward Fiona Wilson, to push the lead to 18-9.

That lead would quickly build to 24-9 on back-to-back 3-pointers by junior guard Kelsi Fitzgerald and Wilson less than a minute into the second quarter. SAGU (7-14, 4-11 SAC) would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the period and OCU held a 41-22 halftime lead.

OCU took a 22-point lead at 44-22 on a 3-pointer by senior guard Erika Ankney at the 8:40 mark of the third quarter and a 32-point lead at 62-30 on a 3-pointer by Ankney at the 3:19 mark later in that period.

SAGU would cut the deficit to 71-58 late in the fourth quarter but that's as close as the Lions would get.

Wilson finished with a team-high 19 points for the Stars with senior guard Annilia Dawn contributing 15 points and a team-high four steals. Selzer contributed 14 points and three blocks and Ankney finished with 12 points.

Senior center Selena Driskill came off the bench to contribute a team-high eight rebounds.

OCU made 9 of 30 (30%) 3-pointers while limiting the Lions to 3 of 14 (21.4%) from beyond the arc. The Stars also made the most of their free throw opportunities, making 19 of 20 attempts.

OCU returns to action on Saturday with a home game against the Univeristy of North Texas-Dallas. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Abe Lemons Court.
