OCU at John Brown men's basketball preview

Stars tests their top defense vs. 3-pointers against team with most average 3-point tries in NAIA

THE MATCHUP 
 
• Oklahoma City University faces John Brown (Ark.) in a Sooner Athletic Conference Super Tuesday matchup 
• The Stars compete in their only Tuesday game of the season 
• The game pits the top team in the NAIA in opponents' 3-point shooting percentage against the No. 1 team nationally in 3-point attempts

ABOUT THE STARS
 

• Oklahoma City topped Langston 84-77 on Saturday at C. Felton Gayles Field House in Langston, Okla. Rashaun Coleman converted a 3-point play with 38 seconds remaining to keep the Stars (10-10, 9-4 SAC) in the lead 
Kori Guest, a 6-foot-6 junior from Tulsa, Okla., supplied OCU with 20 points and six rebounds while firing in 5 of 11 3-point attempts. Guest turned in his third 20-point scoring outing of the season. Guest produces 12.6 points and 4.6 rebounds a contest with a 34.5 percent 3-point shooting clip on the season
• Coleman, a 6-foot junior from Houston, and Romario Spence, a 6-7 senior from Luton, England, each tallied 17 points. Coleman notched his second double-double of the season while recording 10 rebounds and three assists. He has put up 15.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.27 steals a game. Spence supplied Oklahoma City with his fourth consecutive double-double with 14 rebounds
• Oklahoma City leads the NAIA by holding opponents to a 24.8 percent 3-point shooting percentage this season 
• The Stars took the eighth spot in the preseason SAC coaches poll. OCU owns 13 SAC regular-season championships and 10 SAC Tournament titles. Oklahoma City has advanced to the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament 25 times all-time and has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008 
• OCU holds the lead in the overall series vs. John Brown 39-20. The Stars overcame an early 11-point deficit in a 60-57 win Dec. 8 at Abe Lemons Arena in the first meeting this season. Coleman served as OCU's ring leader with 19 points and 11 rebounds 
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES 
 
• John Brown took a 72-63 win against Central Christian (Kan.) on Saturday in McPherson, Kan. John Brown (13-8, 7-6 SAC) improved to 4-5 on the road this season 
• Densier Carnes, a 6-6 senior, leads John Brown with 15.9 points and 8.2 rebounds a game this season 
• John Brown shoots 33.2 3-point shots a game to lead the NAIA, while connecting on 11.2 treys on average to rank third in the nation
• The Golden Eagles were picked to finish fifth place in the SAC in the preseason 
   
MEET THE COACHES  
 
Mark Berokoff (first season with OCU) 
• Mark Berokoff guided Randall to three national championships and a national runner-up finish in nine years as head coach of the Saints. Berokoff's record with Randall was 147-122. Randall regularly challenged SAC squads and defeated OCU twice during that time 
• Berokoff coached five national player of the year honorees, 16 all-Americans, three national tournament outstanding player award winners and one scholar all-American with Randall. Berkoff was two-time national coach of the year 
• Berokoff's coaching career includes experience on the high school, college and professional levels. His combined head-coaching record over 19 years in the college and prep ranks is 372-199 

Jason Beschta (eighth season at JBU, 132-94)  
• Led the Golden Eagles to a school-record 28-5 mark for the 2019-20 season. JBU was ranked no. 9 in the NAIA rankings entering the 2020 NAIA National Tournament, which was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. . 
• Guided JBU to its first-ever 20-win season and first-ever NAIA Tournament appearance during the 2018-19 season.   
• Prior to his arrival at JBU, Beschta led Oklahoma Wesleyan for three seasons, amassing a 62-36 record at OKWU. He led the Eagles to a round of 16 finish in the NAIA Division II national tournament in 2012-13, finishing that season 25-10
