OKLAHOMA CITY – Mid-America Christian outlasted Oklahoma City University 4-1 on Tuesday night at Brian Harvey Field.
The Stars maintained a 1-1 tie through 53 minutes until Mid-America Christian, ranked fifth in NAIA men's soccer, struck for three second-half goals. Oklahoma City went to 6-2, 0-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU evened the score at the 13:15 mark. Lucas de Freitas booted the ball over the goalkeeper after dribbling around a defender, finding the net for his sixth goal this year. Tommaso Belli provided the assist for de Freitas, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In the 71st minute, Belli sent a penalty-kick attempt high over the crossbar. Mid-America Christian goalkeeper Jeremi Abonnel made two of his three saves in the second half.
Fabian Forisch of the Evangels scored twice in the 54th minute to break the deadlock. Mid-America Christian halted OCU's winning streak, which had reached five matches.
The Stars' Danilo Vilani collected a season-high eight saves as Mid-America Christian generated 20 shots, 14 on goal.
Mid-America Christian (9-0, 1-0 SAC) became the highest ranked team to visit OCU since the Stars entertained third-ranked Science & Arts on Oct. 12, 2012. Second-ranked Baker (Kan.) came to town earlier that season Aug. 25, 2012. OCU sought its first victory over a top 10-ranked opponent since upending eighth-ranked Science & Arts 2-0 on Sept. 28, 2010 in Chickasha, Okla.
The Stars meet Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Brian Harvey Field.
