WINFIELD. Kan. – Lifted by two late scores, Oklahoma City University defeated Southwestern College (Kan.) 3-2 on Saturday night at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
OCU (2-1) scored the game's first goal when senior
Ljubisa Palic punched in a shot from short range on a ball deflected off of the hands of Southwestern (1-1) goalkeeper Jose Macias in the sixth minute. The home team would score two goals in the 24th minute and that would hold for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Neither team made much headway in the second half until OCU's
Alejandro Viera found the net on a 15-yard strike from the right sideline to the opposite post in the 76th minute, tying the score 2-2. The Stars took a 3-2 lead when
Tommaso Belli weaved through the Moundbuilder defense and found the net on a shot from 12 yards out in the 81st minute. Belli's fancy footwork was set up by a nifty pass from Palic.
Both teams would finish with seven shots on goal with OCU goalkeeper
Danilo Vilani helping boost his team to a win by making five saves. He made a critical stop on a free kick headed towards the inside of the lower left post in the 84th minute, preserving the lead for the Stars. Southwestern would not record another shot on goal the rest of the game.
OCU will play on the home field twice this week, facing York (Neb.) on Thursday and Randall on Saturday. Thursday's game is scheduled for a 2:30 kickoff at Brian Harvey Field.
