LINDSBORG, Kan. – Oklahoma City University opened the 2021 season with a convincing 2-0 non-conference win over Bethany (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.
April Hill led the Stars with a goal and an assist.
Hill got the scoring started when she found the back of the net from 5 yards out off of a back-footed assist from freshman
Jimena Martinez midway through the first half. In the 35th minute, senior
Sofia Carvajal Granados finished a long run by slipping a left to right shot into the net from 12 yards out past the diving Bethany goalkeeper to give the Stars the 2-0 lead. The long run by Carvajal Granados was set up by a defensive stop deep in Bethany territory and a nifty pass from Hill on Bethany's side of the 50-yard line.
OCU (1-0) dominated the pace of action, finishing with a 15-10 advantage in shots and 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Josie Knox finished with five saves for the Stars, including pushing a shot over the bar with under two minutes to play to preserve the shutout.
OCU will return to action with a non-conference road game at Southwestern (Kan.) next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Winfield, Kan.
